Job description

As a Network Engineer, you’ll play a critical role in designing, building, securing, and evolving the network infrastructure that keeps our organization connected and running at its best. You’ll work across LAN, WAN, VPN, and wireless environments, with a primary focus on Meraki, supporting multiple data centers and remote locations across the U.S. You’ll be hands-on in bringing new territories online, coordinating network and ISP installations and making sure new locations are connected, secure, and ready to go from day one. You’ll also proactively monitor and optimize our network environment, troubleshoot complex issues, and identify opportunities to improve performance, reliability, scalability, and security. Network security is an important part of the role. You’ll manage and maintain firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems, and other security technologies while helping ensure our infrastructure remains resilient against evolving threats.

Beyond the technology itself, you’ll be an important technical resource and partner across the Business Technology organization. You’ll collaborate closely with SREs, contractors, developers, Tech Support, Application Support, and security specialists to ensure our network infrastructure works seamlessly with the broader technology ecosystem.

You’ll also have the opportunity to make an impact by mentoring junior Network Engineers and other IT professionals, sharing knowledge, and helping raise the technical capabilities of the team.

This is a role for someone who enjoys solving challenging problems, improving systems, collaborating across teams, and taking ownership of the infrastructure behind a growing organization., * Design, configure, implement, and maintain network infrastructure, including LAN, WAN, VPN, and wireless networks, and maintain appropriate network monitoring tools

  • Coordinate ISP and network installations at new and existing territories
  • Develop and maintain network documentation, including network diagrams, inventory, and change management procedures
  • Monitor network performance, identify and resolve network issues, and proactively address potential problems primarily on Wifi environments
  • Plan and execute network upgrades and enhancements, including hardware and software upgrades and network capacity planning
  • Manage and maintain network security, including firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems, and other security technologies
  • Work collaboratively with other BT professionals, including site reliability engineers, software developers, and security specialists, to ensure that network infrastructure is integrated with other BT systems and services
  • Demonstrates great initiative in providing guidance and mentorship across the BT organization, sharing knowledge and offering assistance without being asked.
  • Stay current with emerging network technologies and trends and recommend changes to improve network performance, security, and reliability
  • Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of each data center’s architecture, and supporting infrastructure elements & vendors within Power.
  • Applies knowledge of each infrastructure ecosystem within all of Power’s data centers respectfully, providing thoughtful input on design and improvement in regard to survivability and scalability.
  • Has in-depth understanding and knowledge of Power’s data center infrastructure & network standards and coding practices, and helps shape SRE standards & operating procedures, and coding practices.
  • Provides technical leadership to assigned primary SRE team, as well as other teams across the BT Services Unit.
  • Helps keep team morale high by being a role model, escalating when additional support is required.
  • Participates regularly and provides product team code reviews and cross team code reviews as well as provides written feedback for performance reviews that is insightful, specific and actionable.
  • Takes responsibility to test work prior to implementation and actively reviews other’s work.
  • Participates in Scrum ceremonies scheduled by the team.

Requirements

  • Demonstrates mastery of the TCP/IP protocol.
  • Delivers high complexity tasks effectively.
  • Plans high complexity projects from planning to implementation.
  • Has mastery of all tools used by the team, such as CheckMK, Grafana, TACGUI, TCPdump, Wireshark.
  • Has advanced knowledge of Power’s technologies, such as Meraki devices, Cisco, Palo Alto, F5.
  • Has advanced knowledge in Linux.
  • Has advanced knowledge of routing protocols (especially EIGRP and BGP).
  • Intermediate knowledge in Ansible, Python, and Bash script.
  • Ability to test and understand new solutions and how they fit into our environment.

  • Must work well in a team environment with other Power employees and SRE teams. Must be able to form positive relationships across the business unit and the Power organization.

  • Must demonstrate a high level of character and promote Power standards of conduct.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 6+ years working with network protocols, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, SMTP, SNMP, and VPN. They should also have strong experience with network hardware, including routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, and wireless access points (Meraki, Cisco, F5, Palo Alto).
  • 2+ years working with network automation and orchestration tools such as Ansible, Python, and PowerShell, experience with scripting and programming languages such as Bash, Perl, and Ruby, and a proven track record of successful network planning, design, implementation, and troubleshooting.
  • Relevant industry certifications, such as CCNP or CCIE, are highly desirable.
