GIS Specialist

The GIS Specialist performs essential mapping, graphics, and tabular data management in support of Bureau of Reclamation water resource management and environmental programs. The incumbent assists in database design, automation and processing macros, and related analytical procedures, while maintaining and updating enterprise geodatabases. Additional responsibilities include reviewing output for data accuracy and adherence to end-user criteria, assisting with ArcGIS Online administration, maintaining operational logs and records, and providing technical GIS assistance to Reclamation staff., · Mapping & Data Production: Generate high-quality cartographic maps, graphic exhibits, and manage tabular data sets to support regional water operations and environmental studies.

· Database Support & Automation: Assist in geodatabase design, workflow automation, and processing macros related to spatial analytical procedures.

· Geodatabase Maintenance: Maintain, update, and manage spatial geodatabases ensuring data integrity and accessibility.

· Quality Assurance: Review spatial and tabular output for data accuracy, quality control, and strict adherence to end-user criteria.

· ArcGIS Online & Administration: Assist with ArcGIS Online administration, organization workflows, and maintain operational logs, records, and files.

· Technical User Support: Provide direct technical GIS assistance and customer support to Reclamation staff and program managers.

Suggested minimum training, education, and experience requirements include the following (comparable work experience is acceptable):

· Education: BA/BS degree in Geography, Natural Resources Management, Earth Sciences, Engineering, or Computer Sciences.

· Experience: Three (3) to five (5) years of GIS production work utilizing the ESRI software suite.

· Cartography & Design: Coursework in cartography and/or graphic design.

· ESRI Training: Successful completion of any combination of three (3) of the following ESRI training courses within the past two (2) years may be substituted for experience/time requirements: ArcGIS Pro, Introduction of Geoprocessing Scripts Using Python, Basics of Python, Managing Lidar Data Using Mosaic Datasets, Map Design Fundamentals, Creating Prediction Surfaces in ArcGIS, Building Geoprocessing Models Using ArcGIS Pro, Creating and Sharing GIS Content Using ArcGIS Online, and User Workflows for ArcGIS Online Organizations.

Location, Workplace Flexibility & Travel

· Workplace Policy: This position is remote optional. Remote personnel must reside within a fifty (50) mile radius of an approved Department of the Interior (DOI) Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) Federal building within the 17 Western states.

· Onboarding Note: Remote personnel are not entitled to reimbursement when performing initial onboarding tasks (background screening, fingerprints, equipment issuance, PIV card certifications) or IT connectivity support at their designated facility.

· Travel Requirements: Travel may be required to CGB area/field offices, training events, conferences, or meetings within the continental United States, subject to prior approval by the Chief of Land Resources (requiring 30 days advance notice). Valid driver’s license and REAL ID required.

Security & Compliance

· Security Clearance: Work is unclassified but involves handling sensitive information (Controlled Unclassified Information / CUI) regularly. Candidates must successfully complete a National Agency Check (NAC) or NACI background investigation and obtain a DOI Personal Identity Verification (PIV) access card prior to reporting.

· Compliance & Safety: Full compliance required with Reclamation IT Security Program (ITSP), Bureau of Reclamation Safety and Health Standards (RSHS), and cybersecurity mandates (including IPv6 interoperability standards).
