Job description
As a National Laboratory, we offer a unique blend of opportunities for the exceptional candidate. This position’s focus encompasses the design, development, implementation, maintenance, operation, and support of information applications relevant to the administration of PNNL’s business systems. Your work will include maintaining and operating existing business information systems, partnering with clients to define, build and deliver innovative software solutions to complex business and scientific problems; working with effective teams from multiple disciplines; and recommending and implementing technology standards and software development best practices. As a member of a stable team, you are expected to develop knowledge of the goals of projects or clients you are supporting - and maintain a customer service focus commensurate with this position.
Your key responsibilities and accountabilities would include:
- Work collaboratively as part of an agile development team that delivers transformational technology solutions and incremental features to a wide range of products.
- Propose software designs and architectural approaches for new features and applications.
- Collaborate effectively on diverse teams (e.g., platform managers / project managers, domain experts, users, and software engineering team) to design and deploy innovative business information systems across the enterprise.
- Provide individual contribution to software development projects across a broad range of technologies and subject areas.
- Utilize software engineering best practices through the entire software development lifecycle and recommend / lead changes in development, maintenance, and system standards.
- Enhance personal technical and professional skills through active mentoring and training
- Assimilate knowledge quickly in a variety of domains.
- Continuously scan the software development landscape for new technologies and methods to achieve results that can be incorporated into the enterprise., This position involves access to sensitive systems and information. U.S. Citizenship is required. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is subject to the Department of Energy Unclassified Foreign Visits & Assignments Program site, information, technologies, and equipment access requirements.
Requirements
- PhD and 3 years of Software Engineering experience -OR-
- MS/MA and 5 years of Software Engineering experience -OR-
- BS/BA and 7 years of Software Engineering experience -OR-
- AA and 16 years of Software Engineering experience in designing, architecting, programming, deploying, and automating software solutions in support of scientific research or consumer digital product development -OR-
- HS/GED and 18 years of Software Engineering experience in designing, architecting, programming, deploying, and automating software solutions in support of scientific research or consumer digital product development
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with JavaScript frameworks such as React, Backbone, or Angular.
- Experience developing APIs and RESTful Web Services.
- Experience integrating with commercial products using APIs and Web Services.
- Exceptional communicator with both technical and nontechnical audiences.
- Experience with iterative development practices such as Agile or Scrum.
- Experience with JavaScript, ASP.NET, C#, HTML, CSS, SQL, JSON.
- Knowledge and experience in the development of complex software systems using development methodologies and best practices.
- Knowledge and experience in applying software design patterns.
- Knowledge and experience in applying layered architecture patterns.
- Experience with unit and integration testing libraries like React Testing Library and Cypress.
- Knowledge of secure coding practices (cross-site scripting and SQL injection).
- Experience with Continuous Integration and Delivery tools and best practices (building pipeline definitions, automation, deployments).
- Knowledge of Azure Cloud services (ASE, APIM, KeyVault, AppInsights).
- Deliver results with highest level of professionalism and integrity.

PNNL lists the full pay range for the position in the job posting. Starting pay is calculated from the minimum of the pay range and actual placement in the range is determined based on an individual’s relevant job-related skills, qualifications, and experience. This approach is applicable to all positions, with the exception of positions governed by collective bargaining agreements and certain limited-term positions which have specific pay rules.
As part of our commitment to fair compensation practices, we do not ask for or consider current or past salaries in making compensation offers at hire. Instead, our compensation offers are determined by the specific requirements of the position, prevailing market trends, applicable collective bargaining agreements, pay equity for the position type, and individual qualifications and skills relevant to the performance of the position.

USD $161,300.00/Yr.
Maximum Salary
USD $255,000.00/Yr.
