Sr. II Backend Engineer, Mobile API

Experteer Overview In this Senior II Backend Engineer role, you will lead backend initiatives powering Slickdeals’ mobile experiences, shaping API strategy and architectural direction. You’ll collaborate with Mobile, Web, Product, Design, and Platform teams to deliver scalable, reliable services and guide modernization efforts. You’ll balance hands-on coding with technical leadership, mentoring engineers and driving cross-functional initiatives. The opportunity centers on building performant APIs, improving observability, and reducing technical debt to support rapid growth. Compensation / Benefits * Lead design and delivery of complex APIs and backend services for iOS and Android * Own backend initiatives from discovery through production support * Define API contracts, dependencies, release strategies, and backward compatibility * Influence backend architecture and establish reusable patterns across mobile products * Identify technical risks and present practical options to partners * Improve reliability, scalability, performance, security, and observability of mobile-facing services * Lead technical design reviews, code reviews, testing strategies, and documentation * Diagnose cross-cutting production issues across mobile, APIs, data services, and infrastructure * Reduce technical debt and modernize legacy systems while balancing delivery * Contribute to cross-platform API development when needed Tasks * Experience supporting large-scale consumer iOS and Android applications * Extensive backend development experience with PHP and a modern PHP framework * Experience designing and operating high-traffic RESTful or GraphQL APIs * Understanding of API contracts, versioning, authentication, caching, pagination, idempotency, and error handling * Performance optimization for APIs with relational databases; caching, monitoring, and query optimization (MySQL or PostgreSQL) * JWT or token-based authentication/authorization * Distributed systems and asynchronous processing (RabbitMQ, Redis, Kafka, etc.) * Mobile push notifications (Firebase Cloud Messaging, APNs) * Comprehensive API testing strategies (unit, integration, contract) * Cloud, containers, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD (GitHub Actions) * Production monitoring, logging, alerting, incident response, root-cause analysis * Feature flags, analytics tracking, and A/B testing * Ability to lead projects across teams without formal authority * Strong written and verbal communication skills Key requirements * competitive base salary * annual bonus * equity package * healthcare insurance plans * 401K matching * Professional Development Reimbursement Program
