Job description

Overland AI has secured funding from prominent defense tech investors including 8VC and Point 72, and built trusted partnerships with DARPA, the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, and Special Operations Command. Backed by eight-figure contracts across the Department of Defense, we are strengthening national security by iterating closely with end users engaged in tactical operations., We are seeking a Software Engineer - Mission Autonomy to build software that enables a single operator to achieve their mission objectives by coordinating multiple autonomous platforms. As a member of the Mission Autonomy team, you will develop mission-level intelligence that supports the operator and complements platform-level (vehicle) intelligence - translating high-level operator intent into coordinated, adaptable behaviors across the team of assets.

The ideal candidate has a strong robotics software background with experience in planning and multi-robot coordination, thrives on rapidly integrating new platforms and technologies, and is excited to push the boundaries of what’s useful with autonomy - transforming our best-in-class ground autonomy into an end-to-end mission capability solution.

In this role, you will

  • Develop AI-powered orchestration functionality that enhances multi-robot execution.
  • Leverage Overland AI’s deep expertise in offroad navigation to create terrain-aware mission planning capabilities.
  • Design interfaces to pass task and status information between centralized mission software and individual assets.
  • Integrate new vehicle types (both OAI-developed and 3rd party) into the Mission Autonomy framework.
  • Rapidly prototype software solutions to deliver to users for immediate feedback, using learnings to inform longer-term development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related discipline.
  • 2+ years of experience as a software engineer for an autonomous robotics company.
  • 2+ years of experience developing in Python in a Linux development environment.
  • Experience in either planning, mapping, or perception
  • Desired Experience & Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated work using terrain or mapping data to plan routes for autonomous vehicles.
  • Experience developing and using simulation tooling.
  • Working knowledge of robotics interface software such as ROS 2, MAVLink and
  • Experience with common military messaging protocols such as Cursor on Target (CoT) and TAK.
  • Experience working with robotic decision-making frameworks ranging from classical (behavior trees) to state-of-the-art (LLM-based).
  • Self-starter who is excited to define the art of possible in a rapidly evolving field.
