Cloud Solutions Engineer

This role provides hands-on technical support across cloud infrastructure, healthcare data pipelines, security, and vendor-delivered solutions, working closely with ADA’s clinical, data governance, and procurement teams. ADA’s primary cloud platform is AWS, with Azure as an acceptable secondary platform; Google Cloud Platform is out of scope for this role. A solution-oriented mindset is essential: the ability to translate program goals and clinical requirements into practical, well-implemented technical outcomes., * Build and support cloud-based solutions for the Diabetes Data Registry - primarily on AWS, with Azure as an acceptable secondary platform - including data storage, compute, and analytics services.

• Support ADA’s technical review of registry and CDS vendor deliverables, helping validate designs against security, interoperability, and performance requirements.
• Build, test, and maintain automated data ingestion pipelines supporting recurring (at least monthly) EHR data feeds, including historical data loads at national scale.
• Support healthcare data interoperability using standards such as FHIR, HL7, and OMOP; assist with data normalization, validation, and quality checks.
• Support HIPAA-compliant data handling, including de-identification (Safe Harbor and Expert Determination) and tokenization/pseudonymization workflows.
• Help implement and maintain security controls, including identity and access management (IAM), encryption in transit and at rest, audit logging, and monitoring.
• Apply DevOps practices: infrastructure as code, automated CI/CD pipelines, and thorough testing and validation.
• Assist with documentation, runbooks, and knowledge transfer to support long-term ADA ownership of the registry.
• Monitor cloud cost and performance and recommend optimizations.

• 2-4 years of experience designing and delivering technical solutions, including experience with a major public cloud IaaS platform, with hands-on AWS experience preferred (e.g., S3, Glue, Redshift, IAM). Candidates with comparable Azure experience (e.g., Azure Data Lake Storage, Azure Databricks) will also be considered.
• Experience with implementation and deployment of software or data solutions.
• Some experience building data pipelines (batch or near real-time), including ETL/ELT, data normalization, and data quality validation.
• Working knowledge of HIPAA requirements and handling protected health information (PHI) or de-identified datasets.
• Familiarity with infrastructure as code and scripting for reusable cloud components (e.g., CloudFormation, Terraform, Python).
• Familiarity with service-oriented architecture, web services, APIs, and SQL.
• Exposure to automated build pipelines, continuous integration, and continuous deployment.
• Foundational understanding of information security principles and practices for protecting sensitive data.
• Experience with software engineering best practices, including code reviews, testing, and version control.
• Ability to work effectively within multi-disciplinary teams.
• Exposure to healthcare data standards and interoperability, including FHIR, HL7, or OMOP, and EHR systems such as Epic or Oracle Health (Cerner).
• Exposure to clinical data registries, real-world evidence datasets, or IRB-governed research environments.
• Familiarity with de-identification, tokenization, and patient-matching approaches.
• Familiarity with open table formats and lakehouse concepts (e.g., Apache Iceberg).
• Direct experience delivering healthcare data or analytics solutions on AWS or Azure.
• Relevant certifications such as AWS Solutions Architect - Associate, AWS Cloud Practitioner, or similar.
• Interest in nonprofit, healthcare, or mission-driven work, and ADA’s mission to prevent and cure diabetes and improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.
• Clear communication skills and ability to build positive working relationships with clinical staff, program leaders, and vendors.
• Comfort working through ambiguity in a developing program; interest in researching new technologies.
