Job description

Under the direct supervision of the Computer Services Supervisor, the Computer Technician is responsible for installation, preventative maintenance and minor repair of all computers and their peripherals, and miscellaneous office equipment. Performs on-call computer help desk duties for library staff and patrons involving computer hardware, applications, and office equipment., First Line Technology Support

  • Assists in diagnosing computer and local area network problems
  • Performs on-call help desk duties for Library staff and patrons involving computer hardware, applications, and office equipment
  • Aids staff in the use of equipment and software
  • Assists patrons in the use of equipment items in the public service area
  • Performs basic computer and office equipment troubleshooting in the public service area

Equipment Maintenance

  • Assists in with maintaining computer and various office equipment supplies
  • Assists with network and Internet maintenance duties
  • Installs communication and computer cabling
  • Installs, configures and tests computer software and updates
  • Performs and coordinates routine maintenance of computers, peripherals and upgrades including but not limited to network adapter cards, video cards, disk drives, and various interface cards
  • Performs physical maintenance on all computers, keyboards, monitors, disk drives, printers, peripherals, and various office equipment
  • Prepares, delivers, and picks up equipment that is sent out of the building for repair

Special Projects

  • Lead technician on projects as assigned
  • Remains aware of new technologies which have application to library operations

Other

  • Attends appropriate meetings, workshops and seminars
  • Serves on committees as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • High school diploma (or equivalent education and/or work experience) is required
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in computer maintenance.
  • College/technical training in computer science preferred.
  • Ability to drive Library van and have a valid Illinois driver’s license preferred.

Knowledge & Ability

  • Ability to access, input, and retrieve data from the computer
  • Ability to reach, bend, push, pull, grasp, lift, kneel, crouch, stoop, and carry (up to 50 lbs)
  • Ability to stand for varied lengths of time from 2 - 6 hours
  • Ability to operate a two-way radio and telephone
  • Ability to use ladders as necessary
  • Knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office applications
  • Knowledge of interactive web applications and email
