Job description

We are seeking an experienced, creative, hands-on Digital Director committed to democracy. You will own our organization-wide digital program and help more people find us, participate, donate, volunteer, recruit others, and grow into leadership. This is not a strategy-only role: you will set direction and personally build, write, launch, measure, and improve campaigns across email, SMS/MMS, paid advertising, websites, social media, and digital fundraising.

You will connect acquisition, fundraising, organizing, voter engagement, and long-term movement building into clear, measurable ladders of engagement. The role reports to the CEO and campaign manager and works closely with communications, fundraising, field, tech/data, and volunteer teams.

What You’ll DoDigital strategy and advertising

  • Develop organization-wide digital plans, calendars, budgets, goals, and performance targets, translating fundraising, organizing, and public-education priorities into coordinated campaigns.
  • Plan, launch, and optimize paid campaigns across Meta, Google Search, YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn, SMS/MMS, and emerging platforms, including advertising for Democracy Real Estate, our revenue-generating social enterprise.
  • Own targeting, creative testing, landing pages, tracking, retargeting, and reporting for donor acquisition, volunteer recruitment, persuasion, and voter mobilization.
  • Manage advertising contractors when useful; evaluate strategy, creative, pricing, and results; and track acquisition cost, return on ad spend, downstream conversion, audience quality, and long-term value.
  • Build distinct programs for 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and PAC/ballot-measure work, following legal guidance and maintaining appropriate timekeeping and cost allocation.

Ladders of engagement and communications

  • Create, monitor, update, and actively promote ladders that move people from awareness to signing up, donating, volunteering, recruiting others, peer-to-peer recruitment and recurring giving, and leadership.
  • Set goals for movement between stages; identify drop-off points; and improve recruitment, conversion, retention, reactivation, and long-term donor and volunteer growth.
  • Plan, write, build, target, test, and send email and SMS/MMS campaigns for fundraising, recruitment, mobilization, advocacy, voter contact, and rapid response.
  • Lead the regular newsletter process and build audience segments, onboarding, nurture/drip, follow-up, and reactivation journeys while protecting list health and deliverability.
  • Improve websites, landing pages, forms, donation pages, CRM workflows, source attribution, and retargeting so people can move easily from awareness to action.

Content, rapid response, and websites

  • Maintain a consistent, accessible, cross-partisan voice and create compelling copy, simple graphics, and short-form video across channels.
  • Coordinate larger creative projects with staff, volunteers, and vendors while continuing to support volunteer-generated social media.
  • Monitor news and public conversations, move quickly on useful rapid-response opportunities, and keep the Respect Voters and Respect Missouri Voters websites current.

Measurement, systems, and team leadership

  • Own analytics, dashboards, attribution, A/B and multivariate testing, and concise weekly reporting that explains results, lessons, and next tests.
  • Use data to forecast revenue and engagement, allocate budgets, and recommend changes to strategy and execution.
  • Build clear workflows, briefs, calendars, review processes, and quality controls across multiple entities and departments.
  • Work with the Data Director and Tech Organizer; recruit and manage contractors, interns, and volunteers; and equip staff, volunteers, and partners with templates, training, and practical guidance.
  • Manage digital tools and budgets responsibly and recommend when to build internally, use volunteers, or hire outside expertise.

Requirements

  • Professional experience successfully leading or substantially owning multi-channel digital growth, engagement, fundraising, membership, marketing, or organizing programs is required.
  • A demonstrated record of campaigns that moved people to donate, sign up, attend, volunteer, advocate, purchase, subscribe, or lead. This experience may come from campaigns, advocacy, nonprofits, agencies, media, startups, membership organizations, e-commerce, or other settings.
  • Experience building supporter, customer, member, donor, or volunteer journeys across acquisition, conversion, retention, reactivation, and growth.
  • Hands-on experience with several relevant channels and tools, such as paid media, email, SMS/MMS, social media, landing pages, CRM workflows, analytics, Canva, WordPress/Squarespace, Action Network, Bloomerang/Qgiv, CallHub, NGP, Google Ads/Analytics, Meta Ads Manager, LinkedIn, or Reddit.
  • Excellent persuasive writing and editing skills, plus comfort using data and testing to set goals, diagnose problems, and make decisions.
  • Strong project management, attention to detail, and ability to move multiple deadline-driven projects forward independently while communicating early and collaborating across teams.
  • Maturity and curiosity when communicating with people who hold different political views, with a commitment to putting people and policy over party.
  • Ability to work an in-person or hybrid schedule in Richmond Heights, Missouri, with occasional evening or weekend work around elections, major launches, or rapid response.

Helpful, but Not Required

  • Experience across affiliated or partner 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and PAC or ballot-measure organizations.
  • Political campaign, issue-advocacy, civic-engagement, or direct-response fundraising experience.
  • Experience managing significant paid-media budgets, vendors, staff, or volunteer contributors.
  • Familiarity with Missouri communities, politics, media, or civic organizations; basic HTML/CSS, graphic design, video editing, or data visualization.

Political experience is welcome, but it is not required. We care more about whether you can build an effective digital program than where you learned how. No particular degree is required., * Campaign: 2 years (Preferred)
