Web Application Developer - Illinois Fire Service Institute Illinois Fire Service Institute The Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) is seeking a Web Application Developer to join our team. As the statutory fire academy for the State of Illinois, IFSI trains thousands of firefighters across the state and beyond-delivering hands-on education through a unique blend of campus, online, and regional training programs. IFSI operates as a continuing education and public service unit of the University of Illinois, offering the stability, resources, and benefits of a world-class public university while maintaining a mission-driven focus on first responder training., The Web Application Developer position is responsible for full cycle dynamic web application development. Additional responsibilities to include testing, implementation, maintenance, and support of existing applications utilizing a variety of programming languages to connect to dynamic database systems. Other duties include development and maintenance of the Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) website, and the IFSI Learning Management System (Moodle). This position will work closely with the other members of the IT staff to determine client needs and assist with programming projects and development., Web Application Development and Maintenance
- Design, testing, and implementation of web application solutions utilizing many different programming/scripting languages such as JavaScript, HTML, CSS, MSSQL (SQL), Coldfusion and other languages as needed.
- Development and maintenance of web-based applications for managing student records, class information, billing, timesheets, travel reporting, and other mission critical business components.
- Assist with resolution of web application related errors, bug testing, and documentation.
- Designing responsive applications with mobile compatibility and ADA compliance.
- Maintain compliance with W3C, State of Illinois, University of Illinois, and ADA web standards.
- Integrate data with the IFSI Learning Management System and other Web based content.
- Assist with codebase version control usage and management along with other programming staff.
Database Maintenance and Web Services Infrastructure Support
- Assist the Manager of Systems Services/Director of Information Technology and other IT staff with managing database schema and maintaining data integrity.
- Assist the Manager of Systems Services/Director of Information Technology and other IT staff with managing Web Server Infrastructure, Web Security, search engine improvements, and associated services.
Requirements
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years of work experience in IT-related functions such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field. College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline may be substituted as follows: 30 semester hours equals one (1) year, Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen (18) months, 90 semester hours equals two (2) years, Bachelor’s Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years).
- Demonstrated experience developing web applications.
- Demonstrated proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
- Demonstrated experience querying and working with relational databases using SQL or similar technologies.
- Demonstrated experience in at least one server-side scripting language (such as Coldfusion, Java, Python, Ruby, Node.js, PHP, or ASP.NET.
Preferred:
- Three to Five years of progressively more responsible work experience in a Programming and Web Application Development related profession doing full stack development.
- Experience creating and altering SQL queries to retrieve and display data.
- Experience with JavaScript Frameworks such as Angular, Angular JS, or React.
- Experience with ColdFusion programming language. Other server-side scripting languages considered with desire to transfer existing knowledge and skills to current environment.
- Demonstrated experience with Version Control Systems such as GIT.
- Experience with secure applications programming, including using SSL, TLS, to secure communications.
- Ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining attention to detail.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to communicate technical information to non-technical collaborators.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and in team settings.
- Ability to self-manage and be managed in a variety of team settings and scenarios.
Benefits & conditions
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service IT Tech Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after September 28, 2026. Salary range is $80,000-90,000. This position is eligible for sponsorship for work authorization, except for sponsorship of a new H1B petition that would incur the $100,000 fee., This position is intended to be eligible for benefits. This includes Health, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, a Retirement Plan, Paid time Off, and Tuition waivers for employees and dependents.
