Job description

We’re building and optimizing a strategic VMware Cloud Foundation 9.1 platform stack across our county government infrastructure. We need a senior architect to own the end-to-end design, validation, and optimization of our VMware AVI load balancer deployment within a multi-workload environment (VPC, NSX networking, OpenShift, Kubernetes, and traditional VM infrastructure). This is a high-impact, individual-contributor role with direct influence across platform engineering, infrastructure operations, and cloud ops teams., * Design and architect the AVI load balancer platform within VCF 9.1, including integration with NSX networking, VPC topology, OpenShift/Kubernetes clusters, and VM workload infrastructure.

  • Lead strategic design decisions for load balancing architecture, high availability, disaster recovery, and multi-workload traffic management.
  • Build and validate the end-to-end AVI deployment across development, staging, and production environments.
  • Establish operational patterns, monitoring, alerting, and runbooks for platform teams to manage and optimize AVI at scale.
  • Collaborate with platform engineering, infrastructure ops, and cloud ops teams to align on architecture, standards, and best practices.
  • Optimize performance, cost, and security posture of the load balancing platform post-launch.
  • Document architecture decisions, design artifacts, and technical specifications for audit, compliance, and future maintainability.
  • Ensure solutions meet government cybersecurity and compliance requirements (change control, security posture, backup/recovery, audit trails).

Requirements

  • Deep hands-on experience with VMware AVI (NSX Advanced Load Balancer) architecture, deployment, and optimization.
  • Strong knowledge of VMware Cloud Foundation 9.x, including vSphere, NSX, and VCF lifecycle management.
  • Proven expertise in NSX networking, overlay networks, and network segmentation.
  • Working knowledge of OpenShift and Kubernetes deployments, load balancing patterns, and ingress controllers.
  • Experience designing and managing hybrid workload environments (VMs, containers, and Kubernetes).
  • Solid understanding of VPC design, networking, and integration with enterprise infrastructure.
  • Experience in government or regulated environments (security posture, change control, compliance documentation).
  • Strong communication and ability to influence across multiple technical teams without direct authority.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with AVI multi-cloud deployments or hybrid cloud environments.
  • Familiarity with container security, network policies, and service mesh patterns.
  • Track record optimizing existing AVI or load balancing platforms for cost and performance.
  • Experience documenting architecture for audit, compliance, and change control processes., A senior architect who thrives on owning the design and validation of complex infrastructure platforms. You have deep VMware and load balancing expertise, you can influence and align stakeholders without direct authority, and you’re comfortable operating in a government environment where documentation, compliance, and change control matter. You deliver clear architectural decisions, solid documentation, and operational patterns that teams can run with for years., * Infrastructure architecture: 8 years (Preferred)
  • VMware: 6 years (Preferred)
  • VMware AVI: 3 years (Preferred)
  • Kubernetes: 3 years (Preferred)

Benefits & conditions

  • Duration: 3-6 months (with potential extension based on performance and project needs).
  • Engagement Model: Individual contributor; cross-functional influence across platform, infrastructure, and cloud ops.
  • Environment: Local county government; emphasis on security, compliance, and operational excellence.
  • Scope: Strategic design and optimization of AVI/NSX platform stack across the organization., Pay: $90.00 - $100.00 per hour

Application Question(s):

  • Can you start a project 8/10 or 8/17?
  • Can you work Pacific Time Zone?
  • This is a 1099 contract. Please confirm.
