Job description

Montis is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to own development of the company’s software stack, including Stratus, FlightVis, and the MWOS. You will be responsible for all software development related to the MWOS - from cloud infrastructure and back-end services to deployment, security, and fleet connectivity for remote observation systems operating 24/7 in demanding environments. This is a senior, hands-on role for an experienced engineer and technical leader who wants the ownership, autonomy, and pace that come with building at an early-stage startup, and who is comfortable wearing many hats as the company grows., * Own all software development related to the MWOS, including cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, data and imagery collection systems, and remote fleet managemen

  • Lead architecture, development, and maintenance of Montis’s full software stack, including Stratus and FlightVis
  • Design, deploy, secure, and monitor cloud-native infrastructure supporting 24/7 remote weather observation
  • Work closely with hardware engineers and manufacturing technicians to integrate software with sensors, cameras, and embedded systems
  • Establish and maintain engineering standards for code review, testing, documentation, security, and observability
  • Manage software contractors and consultants as needed; provide project schedules, cost estimates, and technical planning to leadership
  • Support customer deployments, troubleshooting, and field operations, including regular work at our Palmer/Wasilla shop

Requirements

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience preferred; candidates with less experience and a demonstrated commitment to early-stage startup environments will be considered
  • Proven experience as a principal engineer, cloud architect, and/or technical lead
  • Strong full-stack skills, including Node.js, Python, JavaScript/React, SQL and relational databases, Linux, and shell scripting
  • Deep cloud infrastructure experience (AWS and/or Google Cloud), including Kubernetes, Terraform or CloudFormation, Docker, and CI/CD tooling; experience with remote or edge devices, imagery pipelines, or aviation and weather systems a plus
  • Based in Alaska (or willing to relocate) with the ability to travel regularly to our shop in Palmer/Wasilla

About the company

Montis Corporation is using advanced technologies to provide real-time visibility and weather data when it matters most. Variable weather remains one of the leading causes of transportation accidents, yet legacy observation infrastructure is expensive, slow to build, and absent where conditions pose the greatest risk. The Montis Weather Observation System (MWOS) is a compact platform with panoramic visibility, 24/7 remote connectivity, and integrated sensors that can be deployed in days rather than years. By delivering real-time visibility as a service, we help pilots, drivers, and marines make better decisions, ensuring they get home safely.
