Job description

The Senior Embedded Software Engineer will play a key role in developing the embedded technology underpinning the organisation’s next generation of computer vision products. They will work extensively with embedded Linux systems, imaging sensors, camera modules, device drivers and real-time data acquisition. The position will involve both software development and hands-on interaction with physical hardware, making it particularly well suited to an engineer who enjoys solving problems at the boundary between software and electronics. A major focus will be bringing new hardware platforms and camera systems to life: integrating sensors, developing and debugging interfaces, improving image acquisition performance and turning early technical concepts into stable working prototypes. They will work closely with electrical, mechanical, computer vision and software engineers while retaining significant autonomy over technical decisions and implementation. The Responsibilities

  • Design and develop embedded software supporting real-time imaging, computer vision and camera-based sensing applications.
  • Lead the software aspects of hardware bring-up, integrating CMOS image sensors, camera modules and associated embedded components.
  • Develop, customise and troubleshoot camera drivers, device interfaces and low-level hardware integrations.
  • Build and optimise image acquisition and processing pipelines with a strong focus on latency, stability and consistent system performance.
  • Integrate sensors and peripherals through technologies including MIPI CSI-2, I2C, SPI, UART, USB, Ethernet and GPIO.
  • Incorporate third-party hardware, libraries and software components into embedded Linux environments.
  • Diagnose complex hardware/software issues using oscilloscopes, logic analysers and other electronics debugging equipment.
  • Rapidly prototype new sensing and imaging capabilities, conducting technical testing and performance validation.
  • Collaborate across electrical, mechanical, software and product engineering to progress new hardware from initial bring-up to functional prototypes.
  • Contribute to technical architecture and engineering standards while producing robust, maintainable and well-structured software., This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced embedded engineer who enjoys being close to the hardware and wants to solve technically challenging problems involving cameras, sensors and real-time systems. They will have the opportunity to influence technical decisions, build new systems from the ground up and see their work progress from early experimentation into real-world products. Candidates with strong embedded Linux and C/C++ expertise, particularly those with hands-on camera, imaging or hardware bring-up experience, are encouraged to apply for a confidential discussion about the opportunity. #michaelperry #welcometowhitebay

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics or another relevant technical discipline.
  • 6+ years of professional embedded software engineering experience, including significant hands-on development in C and/or C++.
  • Strong commercial experience developing and debugging software within embedded Linux environments.
  • Practical experience integrating CMOS image sensors, camera modules or comparable imaging hardware into embedded systems.
  • Experience developing or working with camera drivers, image acquisition architectures, ISP integrations or related imaging pipelines.
  • Strong knowledge of embedded hardware communication and connectivity technologies, particularly MIPI CSI-2, I2C and SPI, alongside interfaces such as UART, USB, Ethernet and GPIO.
  • Proven ability to diagnose hardware/software integration problems using oscilloscopes, logic analysers and other laboratory debugging tools.
  • Experience taking new hardware platforms through initial bring-up, integration, troubleshooting and functional prototype development.
  • Ability to independently investigate complex engineering challenges, determine appropriate technical approaches and drive solutions with limited supervision.
  • Experience with relevant embedded or vision technologies such as NVIDIA Jetson, NXP i.MX, Qualcomm, TI, OpenCV, GStreamer or V4L2 would be highly advantageous, particularly within robotics, autonomous systems, drones, industrial automation or computer vision environments.

  • Significant technical ownership and autonomy.
  • Exposure to projects spanning software, electronics, imaging and product engineering.
  • The opportunity to work directly with new hardware and take technologies from initial concept through to functioning products.
  • A collaborative engineering environment with close interaction across hardware and software disciplines.
  • Professional development and opportunities to expand technical expertise as the underlying technology and product portfolio evolve.

About the company

Senior Embedded Software Engineer | Computer Vision | Camera-based Sensors (Hardware) | Software (C/C++) | Pre-Seed Startup | 100% Remote | $200,000 - $250,000 + Equity The Company They’re an early-stage, pre-seed startup developing advanced AI-driven targeting technology designed for real-world environments. This isn’t a game. It’s built for live shooting ranges using real ammunition. Founded by ex-Navy Seals and Apple execs, they’re tackling a space that has seen little meaningful innovation. Their focus is on modernizing training environments, delivering precise performance data, and improving safety standards while they do it. With clear applications across civilian enthusiasts, law enforcement, and defense sectors, and early momentum in fundraising, they’re positioned to define a new category in a largely untouched market.
