Job description

Wyandotte Technologies is seeking a highly experienced Senior Automation Engineer / Splunk SME to support mission-critical systems for Southwestern Power Administration (SWPA), U.S. Department of Energy. This role is centered on enterprise automation, Splunk engineering, DevOps/CI/CD, operational observability, system integration, and complex troubleshooting in secure, highly restricted environments, including real-time SCADA operations.

The successful candidate will serve as a technical subject matter expert, designing automation solutions, expanding Splunk capabilities, reducing manual processes, and improving the reliability, visibility, and supportability of critical systems.

What You’ll Do

Automation Engineering

· Serve as a technical SME for enterprise automation and process improvement.

· Identify manual, repetitive, and error-prone processes and engineer automated solutions.

· Design, develop, test, document, and maintain production-grade automation using PowerShell, Python, Bash, APIs, and other appropriate technologies.

· Automate deployments, configuration, validation, monitoring, reporting, and operational support activities.

· Integrate systems and tools through APIs, scripting, event-driven workflows, and scheduled automation.

Splunk Engineering & Administration

· Serve as a Splunk subject matter expert supporting enterprise and operational environments.

· Design, build, optimize, and maintain Splunk searches, dashboards, alerts, reports, and operational monitoring solutions.

· Develop and maintain advanced SPL (Search Processing Language) queries for troubleshooting, analytics, monitoring, and operational intelligence.

· Onboard and normalize data sources; support indexes, sourcetypes, field extractions, forwarders, retention, access, and platform health.

· Develop actionable alerts and dashboards that improve visibility and reduce time to detect and resolve issues.

· Analyze application, infrastructure, security, and operational logs to identify trends, anomalies, failures, and root causes.

· Integrate Splunk with applications, automation workflows, ServiceNow, and other enterprise tools where appropriate.

DevOps, CI/CD & Software Engineering

· Design, implement, and improve CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation.

· Automate build, test, release, deployment, validation, and rollback processes.

· Develop, enhance, integrate, and support custom enterprise applications.

· Modernize legacy applications and operational processes into secure, supportable architectures.

· Troubleshoot complex production issues and perform detailed root-cause analysis.

· Participate in Agile/Scrum development and sprint activities and create clear technical documentation.

Mission-Critical Operations

· Support systems operating in secure and highly restricted environments, including real-time operational and SCADA-related systems.

· Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation and occasional evening/weekend maintenance or deployment activities.

· Work closely with SWPA stakeholders, technical teams, and leadership to translate operational needs into reliable technical solutions.

Requirements

· Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field plus 5+ years of relevant professional experience; OR 9+ years of relevant software engineering, automation, DevOps, systems integration, or implementation experience.

· Experience in client relationship building and team communication

· 5+ years of experience designing, developing, and supporting production-grade automation solutions.

· Strong scripting experience using PowerShell, Python, Bash, or comparable technologies.

· 5+ years of hands-on Splunk engineering or administration experience in enterprise or production environments, including advanced SPL expertise.

· Experience developing Splunk dashboards, alerts, reports, data onboarding, and operational monitoring solutions.

· Experience analyzing logs and telemetry to troubleshoot complex application or infrastructure problems.

· Experience designing or maintaining CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation.

· Experience with Git or another modern version-control platform.

· Strong troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, communication, and independent technical ownership skills.

Preferred Qualifications

· Splunk certification (Splunk Core Certified Power User, Splunk Enterprise Certified Admin, or higher) strongly preferred; advanced Splunk administration, architecture, or engineering experience.

· Complex SPL development, search optimization, data onboarding, forwarders, indexes, sourcetypes, field extraction, and data normalization.

· Automated remediation, event-driven automation, REST APIs, enterprise integrations, and ServiceNow workflow automation.

· C#, .NET, Python, JavaScript, and/or C++; relational databases, SQL, and web application development.

· Windows and Linux environments; secure or restricted computing environments.

· SCADA, industrial control systems, real-time operational systems, utilities, energy, or other critical-infrastructure environments.

· Technical leadership or mentoring of engineers and administrators.

The Candidate We’re Looking For

This is an SME-level automation and Splunk engineering role, not a traditional application-development position. We are looking for a senior engineer who can independently design automation, engineer Splunk solutions, troubleshoot complex operational issues, and establish technical standards for the team.

Employment Requirements

· U.S. Citizenship is required.

· Must successfully complete a 7-year background investigation.

· Must be able to work onsite in Springfield, Missouri.

· Must participate in an on-call rotation supporting mission-critical systems.
