Job description

Our top-notch IT Help Desk Customer Support position serves as a phone, email, and walk-in computing resource and support to UW-Superior, students, alumni, faculty, staff, and affiliates. Our employees respond to inquiries concerning campus-wide applications, network connectivity, PC & Macintosh computer hardware and operating systems, application software, internet browsers, and other supported software.

Great customer service, listening, communication, questioning, and problem-solving skills are important. A basic knowledge of computer systems, software, and campus-wide applications with an ability to learn technical concepts and new applications quickly are key components of this position.

Student employees hired for this position will start their training learning about our computer labs and classroom technology. Supporting other students in the lab environment will involve answering questions and maintaining printers (paper/toner/etc.).

Supporting classrooms will involve regularly scheduled classroom visits to check on equipment and reporting any failures to our classroom technicians. Student employees will also support faculty during on-call situations to help diagnose and instruct the user how to operate the classroom equipment., The IT Help Desk Customer Support position requires at least half-time student status and a commitment to work 10-12 hours/week up to a maximum of 20 hours/week when classes are in session (potentially up to 40 hours/week when classes are not in session and over summer). Shifts are scheduled around your classes and other external university related activities.

If you apply for a position and are selected for an interview, we will contact you directly by e-mail or phone. If offered employment, you will need to have a social security card, and a form of identity, to complete the hiring paperwork.

Notice to New Employees: Employment will require a criminal background check. A pending criminal charge or conviction will not necessarily disqualify an applicant. In compliance with the Wisconsin Fair Employment Act, the University does not discriminate based on arrest or conviction record., The University will not reveal the identities of applicants who request confidentiality in writing, except that the identities of ‘final candidates’ must be revealed upon request. According to the Attorney General, ‘final candidates’ under Wisconsin law means the five candidates who are considered most qualified for the position. See Wis. Stat. Sec. 19.36(7)(a).

Employment will require a criminal background check, and if you have prior work history within the last seven years with Universities of Wisconsin or State of Wisconsin agencies, a personnel file review check for employee misconduct. It will also require your references to answer questions regarding employee misconduct, sexual violence and sexual harassment. The University reserves the right to check references with notice given to the candidates at the appropriate time in the process.

Employment is subject to federal laws that require verification of identity and legal right to work in the United States as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act.
