Job description

Gateway Preparatory Academy is seeking a knowledgeable, self-motivated Director of Information Technology to own and operate the school’s entire technology program. This is a full-time, hands-on role: you will be the school’s sole technology professional, responsible for both the day-to-day technical operations and the longer-term planning, budgeting, and vendor relationships that keep our systems reliable and our students safe., Technology Leadership & Planning

  • Develop and maintain the school’s multi-year technology plan, including refresh cycles for devices, servers, and network equipment
  • Prepare and manage the annual technology budget; recommend purchases and prioritize spending
  • Serve as the school’s primary point of contact for technology vendors, ISPs, and service providers; evaluate proposals and manage contracts and renewals
  • Administer E-Rate applications, documentation, and compliance
  • Recommend and draft technology policies (acceptable use, device handling, data security) for administrative and board approval
  • Report on technology status, risks, and needs to school leadership

Systems Administration

  • Manage and maintain the Windows Server environment (Domain Controllers, DNS, Group Policy)
  • Administer Active Directory: user creation, OU structure, security groups, and automation
  • Manage file servers and shared resources
  • Oversee Windows Deployment Services (WDS) imaging and device deployment
  • Maintain staff and student account lifecycle processes (onboarding through offboarding)

Google Workspace & Microsoft 365

  • Administer the Google Workspace environment, including organizational units and security policies
  • Maintain Google Cloud Directory Sync (GCDS)
  • Administer the Microsoft 365 tenant
  • Manage email routing, archiving, and account security, including multi-factor authentication enforcement

Networking & Infrastructure

  • Maintain wired and wireless network infrastructure
  • Configure and troubleshoot VLANs, switching, and spanning tree
  • Manage firewall rules and network security policies
  • Oversee content filtering and student internet safety systems
  • Diagnose and resolve connectivity and network performance issues

Cybersecurity & Compliance

  • Enforce security best practices across all school systems
  • Monitor for and respond to security threats and incidents
  • Maintain backups and disaster recovery procedures; test restores regularly
  • Support compliance with FERPA, CIPA, COPPA, and Utah student data privacy requirements (Utah Code 53E-9), including the school’s student data protection obligations
  • Maintain documentation required for state and federal technology reporting

Device & Asset Management

  • Maintain accurate inventory of all student and staff devices
  • Deploy and maintain student lab and classroom computers
  • Manage Chromebooks and Windows devices, including MDM and enrollment
  • Maintain printers, projectors, and other network-connected equipment
  • Coordinate warranty claims and repairs

Support & Training

  • Provide technical support to staff, administration, and students
  • Assist teachers with classroom technology integration and offer training as needed
  • Document systems, processes, and network configuration so that operations are not dependent on any one person’s memory
  • Supervise student aides or contracted support as applicable

Requirements

The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently, enjoys solving problems end to end, and can explain technical decisions clearly to teachers, administrators, and our governing board., * Five or more years of progressively responsible IT experience, including at least two years administering Windows Server and Active Directory

  • Demonstrated experience administering Google Workspace
  • Solid understanding of networking fundamentals: VLANs, DNS, DHCP, switching, and routing concepts
  • Experience with device imaging and large-scale deployment
  • Working knowledge of cybersecurity best practices and incident response
  • Ability to work independently, set priorities, and manage a workload with minimal supervision
  • Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical staff and collaborate effectively with teachers and administrators
  • Strong troubleshooting, organizational, and written communication skills
  • Must pass a criminal background check and fingerprinting as required for Utah school employees

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a K-12 school environment
  • Experience with E-Rate applications and compliance
  • Experience with Ruckus switching and wireless systems
  • Experience with Google Cloud Directory Sync (GCDS)
  • Experience administering Microsoft 365
  • PowerShell scripting and automation experience
  • Experience managing a technology budget or vendor contracts
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Relevant certifications (CompTIA Network+/Security+, Microsoft, Google Workspace Administrator, or similar)

Schedule & Availability

This is a full-time, on-site position. On-site presence during school hours is required, and some flexibility in daily scheduling may be available. The role requires occasional after-hours and limited weekend availability for maintenance windows, system outages, and time-sensitive projects, as well as availability during school breaks for major upgrades and device refreshes.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and move computer equipment weighing up to 40 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to work in server closets, network spaces, and other confined areas, including occasional work on ladders
  • Ability to sit or stand at a workstation for extended periods
