Job description

We are seeking an experienced Network Fiber Architect to support the design, planning, expansion, and lifecycle management of a large regional dark fiber optic network. This position plays a critical role in ensuring that the organization’s fiber infrastructure-serving government, educational institutions, and nonprofit partners-remains resilient, scalable, and aligned with long-term strategic objectives. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in fiber network engineering, optical transport systems, and large scale infrastructure planning. The architect will collaborate closely with internal teams, external partner agencies, and service recipients to develop robust network solutions that support regional connectivity and public service missions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field.

  • 10+ years of experience in fiber network engineering, optical systems design, or network architecture roles.

  • Extensive knowledge of dark fiber infrastructure, OSP/ISP engineering, splice design, cable routing, and optical budgeting.

  • Hands-on experience with OTDR testing, power metering, optical analysis, and fiber monitoring platforms.

  • Strong understanding of DWDM/CWDM, optical amplification, and transport technologies.

  • Experience interpreting construction drawings, permitting requirements, and right-of-way regulations.

  • Ability to diagnose complex optical impairments and fiber issues.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with partner agencies and internal stakeholders.

  • Relevant certifications (e.g., FOA CFOT/CFOS, BICSI DCDC/TECH, vendor optical certifications) are a plus. * Master’s degree in Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field.

  • Experience with network automation, fiber asset management systems, GIS mapping, and route design tools.

  • Knowledge of SDN transport systems, open optical networking, and next generation photonic technologies.

  • Experience planning large-scale regional or metropolitan fiber networks.

  • Project management experience and ability to lead infrastructure projects from planning to completion.

  • Familiarity with public-sector contracting, permitting, and interagency coordination.
