Job description

The Scientific Programmer III - Algorithm Integration bridges the gap between scientific development and operational production by integrating, testing, validating, and supporting scientific software applications in a remote work environment. This role collaborates with Science Teams, developers, and stakeholders to document requirements, establish test baselines, verify outputs, and ensure code changes are successfully transitioned into reliable operational environments.

Success is demonstrated through accurate integrations, effective stakeholder coordination, high-quality testing and documentation, and the delivery of dependable production-ready solutions.

What You Will Do in This Role

The Scientific Programmer III - Algorithm Integration supports the operationalization of scientific algorithms by documenting requirements, integrating and validating code, establishing testing processes, ensuring output accuracy, and collaborating with scientific and technical stakeholders to deliver reliable production-ready solutions.

Responsibilities include:

  • Analyze and document algorithm inputs, outputs, workflows, and production rules across operational units, identifying variations in requirements and implementation approaches.
  • Define and maintain operational execution procedures, including run triggers, intermediate data exchanges, processing workflows, and final delivered output products.
  • Establish, maintain, and validate project baseline test cases in collaboration with Science Teams to support consistent software verification.
  • Evaluate code updates and enhancements against established baselines to identify impacts, maintain functionality, and support regression testing activities.
  • Review and analyze regression test results to identify issues, verify fixes, and ensure continued algorithm reliability.
  • Coordinate with Science Teams and technical stakeholders to communicate progress, resolve issues, manage dependencies, and track project activities through tools such as Jira.
  • Integrate and validate software components in alignment with coding standards, interface requirements, build processes, and project documentation checklists.
  • Verify output products for accuracy, quality, format compliance, logging requirements, and adherence to operational standards.
  • Troubleshoot, optimize, and debug code while supporting updates to input/output file formats and data processing workflows.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including production rules, delivery documentation, operational procedures, and user guidance materials.
  • Demonstrate delivered software capabilities and production workflows while providing technical support during transition to operational environments.
  • Develop and execute test cases to evaluate impacts from upstream data changes and support downstream algorithm enhancements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related scientific or technical discipline.
  • 6-8 years of experience in system integration, software deployment, or IT operations.
  • Hands-on experience with one or more of the following programming languages: FORTRAN, C, or C++, supporting application development, integration, maintenance, or performance-focused initiatives.
  • Working knowledge of Python for application support, scripting, or automation.
  • Strong understanding of configuration management, APIs, system interfaces, and data flow between interconnected systems.
  • Experience with container technologies, preferably Docker, and container orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, analyze, and resolve complex software integration issues.
  • Strong documentation, communication, and coordination skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across technical teams.

Work authorization/security clearance requirements

  • Ability to obtain a security clearance.
