Job description

We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to serve as a trusted advisor on the data architecture underpinning the client’s platform. This is an advisory engagement; there’s a working prototype but no production data pipelines yet, so the value you bring is judgment, not throughput. You’ll help the team think through how healthcare data formats like 837/835 EDI and eligibility/benefits responses should flow into storage and business logic, pressure-test the plan for HIPAA-compliant architecture, and help scope what a real clearinghouse/SFTP ingestion pipeline will require. As the platform matures, the expectation is that this role grows into hands-on ownership of the production data services layer.

This is a short-term initial advisory engagement, with potential for future fractional engagements as the product matures. The role is part-time, roughly 5-10 hours a week for now, fully remote, and asynchronous. Candidates can be based anywhere in Canada or the United States., * Advise on the design of production services sitting on top of the integration layer: data sync, storage, business logic.

  • Help shape the approach to clearinghouse and SFTP data ingestion pipelines.
  • Advise on working with healthcare EDI formats, especially 837 (claims), 835 (remittance), and eligibility/benefits (270/271) responses.
  • Pressure-test the plan for building HIPAA-compliant systems from the ground up, not retrofitted later.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of backend engineering experience, with meaningful exposure to healthcare data pipelines specifically.
  • Fluency in 837/835 EDI and eligibility/benefits response formats.
  • Experience building HIPAA-compliant systems from initial architecture, not just compliance patching.
  • A track record of owning clearinghouse or SFTP-based data ingestion in production.

Nice-to-Have

  • Cerner experience.

Of Note

  • Completed background checks will be required before the start date if you are selected as a winning candidate.

About the company

Our client is a healthcare technology company building a new enterprise platform focused on upstream workflow and revenue cycle challenges for health systems. The product is in stealth, with a working prototype and active conversations underway with prospective customers. The strength of the underlying data architecture, how claims, eligibility, and remittance data will actually flow through the system, is part of what those conversations are testing, well before any of it needs to run in production.
