Job description

As a Telecom & IC Systems Engineer, you will develop the electronic interface layer that controls, validates, and reads out the photonic computing devices. You will design mixed-signal, reconfigurable, and embedded systems to drive on-chip modulators and read multi-state optical logic.

We are looking for someone with a strong background in telecommunications and embedded systems, capable of designing complex electro-optic platforms, solving technical challenges, and collaborating with photonics engineers and physicists to integrate the full processor.

As we are a small team, we are looking for an active and autonomous profile who does not only execute predefined tasks, but also proactively participates in the evolution of the project, proposes improvements, and collaborates closely with the rest of the team., * Design the electronic interface layer between photonic computing devices and digital systems.

  • Develop control circuits for optoelectronic components such as lasers, modulators, photodetectors, and amplifiers.
  • Implement electro-optical (E/O) and opto-electronic (O/E) conversion systems for 1550 nm photonic components.
  • Work with analog and mixed-signal electronics: drivers, amplifiers, transimpedance stages, ADCs, comparators, and signal acquisition.
  • Develop FPGA-based control logic for modulation, timing, and photonic multi-level readout.
  • Integrate embedded systems based on RISC-V or other processors.
  • Develop firmware and low-level software for peripheral and system control.
  • Design and prototype PCBs for experimental validation.
  • Participate in building functional demonstrators of the photonic-electronic system.
  • Collaborate with photonics, materials, and fabrication teams to co-design and integrate the overall system.
  • Coordinate and manage international stakeholder meetings and contacts, * Annual gross salary: 30,000€ (12 monthly payments) depending upon experience and confirmed grade
  • Performance bonus: 10% of annual gross salary linked to technical milestones and project progress
  • Access to advanced research infrastructure and collaboration with external laboratories
  • Integration into an international, interdisciplinary team of physicists and engineers
  • Selection process: the interview is held in person in Barcelona (travel expenses to the interview are not covered by the company)

Requirements

As part of a small, highly collaborative team, you will contribute across different stages of the project-from simulation and experimentation to material analysis, integration with manufacturers, technical documentation, and communication with international researchers, companies, suppliers, and external partners. We are not looking for experts in every area, but for people with a strong foundation in photonics, a willingness to learn, and motivation to actively contribute to an ambitious technological project., * Degree in Telecommunications Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Physics Engineering, Industrial Electronics, or related fields.

  • Strong knowledge of analog and digital circuits, embedded systems, and optoelectronic communication.
  • Understanding of photonic components such as modulators, photodetectors, lasers, and waveguides.
  • Experience with FPGA development and embedded systems.
  • Knowledge of programming for embedded systems (C/C++, Python, or equivalent).
  • Hands-on experience with optical-electronic lab setups, lasers, and measurement systems.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team., * Master’s or PhD in Telecommunications, Electronics, or related fields.
  • Experience in mixed-signal or high-speed systems.
  • FPGA experience (Xilinx Vivado/Vitis, Intel Quartus, Yosys/Verilator).
  • Experience with RISC-V or other embedded processor architectures.
  • PCB design experience (Altium, KiCad, or equivalent).
  • Experience with EDA tools (Cadence, Spectre, SPICE, ADS, etc.).
  • Experience with 1550 nm optoelectronic components.
  • Experience in telecom-photonic integration or PICs.
  • Ability to propose new ideas and explore alternative approaches.
  • Curiosity, initiative, and willingness to learn complementary areas.
  • Ability to communicate technical results and participate in meetings with external collaborators.
