Job description

As a Software Development Manager in the EC2 Gateway Networking Organization, you will build next-generation software-defined networking infrastructure at scale. Your team delivers best-in-class networking services using custom hardware and EC2 native instances to connect customer VPCs globally.

You own the Internet Gateway and will partner with VPC, S3, Direct Connect, DDB, Outposts, and other services to deliver features, improve availability and cost, and operate at extraordinary scale. In this role, you’ll provide technical leadership, solve complex software problems, and make strategic trade-offs between short-term and long-term results. You’ll think in terms of architecture, not just code, while elevating our ability to build and operate high-availability systems worldwide.

This hands-on position requires broad engineering competence and deep technical knowledge of control plane development, DevOps, continuous integration, infrastructure tools, and distributed systems. You’ll lead a development team to innovate and deliver core control plane software for EC2 Networking.

The ideal candidate is comfortable in leadership roles and passionate about mentoring engineers. You understand customer obsession and operational excellence. You know when to partner with and influence other teams to deliver results, and you prioritize hiring and developing top talent.

We embrace diversity through ten employee-led affinity groups reaching 40,000 employees across 190 chapters globally. Our culture of inclusion is reinforced through our 16 Leadership Principles and learning experiences like Conversations on Race and Ethnicity (CORE) and AmazeCon conferences. We value work-life balance and offer flexible working hours to help you establish flow that energizes both your personal and professional life. Our team supports new members through knowledge sharing, mentorship, one-on-one coaching, and thorough code reviews. We assign projects that help you develop into a well-rounded engineer ready for complex challenges.

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain - and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.

You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion., * Lead and manage a team of software engineers building next-generation software-defined networking infrastructure for AWS at scale

A day in the life There is no average day for an EC2 Gateway Networking SDM. This sounds cliché, but we are constantly growing, learning, and improving. An SDM in this org works with the team to set realistic delivery targets while insisting on the highest standards. They earn trust with the team, leadership, and our partners with clear, honest communication, delivering results, and embracing a bias for action. We are constantly learning, always curious, and not afraid to dive deep to fully understand problems in our very complex space. Our SDMs are our builders’ cheerleaders - unblocking, coaching, encouraging, and counseling as needed.

About the team This team builds and runs the data planes that implement the networking gateways into EC2. Daily interactions include working with other services teams to ensure interoperability, our internal customers to ensure we are meeting their needs and delivering on schedule, and other parts of EC2 VPC Networking, S3, DDB, and Direct Connect (to name a few). The teams mission is to provide highly available data planes at five 9s of availability that customers can rely upon to provide reliant, secure, and scalable systems to their own customers.
