Job description
As a data and cybersecurity business counsel, you will have the opportunity to support the enterprise in navigating changing laws, regulations, and security landscapes while operationalizing data and cybersecurity strategies. In this high-level support role, you will partner closely with stakeholders across both the cybersecurity and data organizations to help anticipate and mitigate legal, operational, and reputational risk. Your legal advice will be informed by active, cross-functional collaboration in an environment that values insight, promotes continuous learning, and rewards creative, business-minded problem-solving.
This position will have responsibility for:
- Strategic Counseling & Support: Providing proactive, business-minded legal support and counsel to business and technical stakeholders across both the cybersecurity and eData organizations.
- Cybersecurity & Incident Response Support: Supporting legal guidance for cybersecurity operations, incident response preparedness, and technical risk management, helping ensure alignment with regulatory and legal requirements.
- Enterprise Data & Risk Management: Assisting in identifying, evaluating, and managing legal risks associated with data use, privacy, emerging technology, and data governance.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborating closely with Legal colleagues, Compliance, Risk, and technical teams to help develop practical, legally sound solutions for novel issues.
- Regulatory & Legislative Monitoring: Monitoring key legal, regulatory, and legislative developments in cyber and data realms to help inform business decisions and risk strategies.
- Disclosure & Reporting Support: Assisting with reviewing relevant legal disclosures, regulatory filings, and executive reporting related to cybersecurity and eData.
Requirements
- You are an intellectually curious and business-oriented lawyer who thrives in a fast-paced environment and has experience advising on cutting-edge technology, particularly in the areas of AI, cybersecurity or data. You are comfortable being the go-to expert on legal topics and have a knack for breaking down complexity into simple terms.

- Ownership: You have a desire to own your work, are biased to action, and predict long-term consequences with excellent judgment.
- Communication: You can influence others, build collegial relationships, and write clearly and concisely., * Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
- Active member in good standing of at least one state bar
- At least 4 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm environment, at a government agency, as a military judge advocate, or as in-house counsel, * Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Machine Learning, or Data Science
- 2+ years experience with AI and product development
- Experience providing legal advice related to US and global privacy regulations
- Experience providing legal advice related to Section 1033 of the Dodd-Frank Act
- 5+ years of experience as an attorney in a law firm environment, at a government agency, as a military judge advocate, or as in-house counsel
Benefits & conditions
The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
McLean, VA: $200,700 - $229,100 for Sr. Manager, Sr. Counsel
New York, NY: $219,000 - $249,900 for Sr. Manager, Sr. Counsel
Richmond, VA: $182,500 - $208,300 for Sr. Manager, Sr. Counsel
Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.
This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
