Department OverviewMotorola Solutions is a world leader in the field of professional mobile communications systems with an impressive heritage of technological innovations and a global base of installed systems. This opening is in Motorola Solutions’ Systems Engineering group, and is focused on the market in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. The group’s main business is the design and implementation of mission-critical digital mobile communication systems for Government & Public Safety Communications customers. Many of our systems are designed around the APCO 25 communications standard. With the growth of data services many of our customer’s mobile wireless networks are being enhanced with LTE infrastructure for applications such as live mobile video transmission supplementing our traditional core voice and narrowband data networks.

This opportunity is located in T4W, covering projects across Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Job Description

NOTE: This position will require 25 to 50% Travel

The Systems Engineer will work with a field team of Project Management, Systems Engineers, System Technologists, Construction Managers, and Customer Service Managers, and will be responsible for leading technical aspects of the assigned project until system acceptance.

This involves:

  • Design and implementation of the radio network including infrastructure, subscribers, mobile backhaul and WAN and CEN networks.
  • High level of customer and consultant interaction involving customer design reviews, customer witnessed staging and acceptance testing events, coverage acceptance testing, live system upgrades, and troubleshooting efforts.
  • System buildout, configuration and acceptance testing in both lab staging and field environments
  • Radio coverage testing, frequency analysis and interference mitigation
  • Radio system licensing (FCC/Industry)
  • Preparation of system fleet map, encryption and radio programming templates
  • Complete system documentation
  • Live system cutovers and upgrades

Requirements

  • Radio Frequency Engineering principles
  • Land / Mobile Radio Engineering principles
  • RFDS principles to include antenna and cable selection, transmit combiners, receive multi-couplers, and lightning protection systems.
  • P25 Land Mobile Radio terminology and two-way subscriber radio provisioning methods.
  • Experience with Motorola ASTRO 25 architecture is a plus.
  • Servers and related systems to include: VMware ESXI, Linux, and Microsoft operating systems.
  • Construction of remote communication sites to include: site selection, grounding, compound development, tower and shelter requirements.
  • Fortinet and Juniper firewalls, Nokia 7705 series routers, Juniper SRX/MX (Junos) series routers, HP/Aruba and Juniper switches
  • Remote access using SSH, SCP, SFTP, RDP
  • Knowledge with point-to-point Microwave systems, Microwave RF & Network design
  • FCC licensing and frequency search
  • Software applications integration, Application Protocol Interfaces (API) concepts, computer operating systems, and the OSI model.
  • Networking protocols and devices including RSVP-TE, OSPF, ISIS, BGP, MPLS, SIP, RTP, SNMP, NAT, routers, switches, and stateful packet firewalls.
  • Knowledge of physical layer such as fiber, copper, and microwave.
  • Knowledge of IP networking, network design methodologies & troubleshooting (Ethernet, TCP/IP, L2/L3, MPLS).
  • Certifications a plus through CompTIA Network+, Juniper JNCIA-Junos, Nokia NRS1, CCNA or similar a plus.
  • Works collaboratively and builds relationships with other colleagues, customers, and third party service professionals.
  • Self-motivated, good written and oral communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills, * Bachelor’s Degree in an engineering or technical discipline and 5+ years of engineering or technical experience OR 7 years of engineering or technical experience
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. indefinitely is required. Employer work permit sponsorship is not available for this position.
