Job description

The Alaska Satellite Facility (ASF) is seeking a Junior Software Developer to join our development team. The applicant hired for this position will join a team responsible for developing operational software to support processing, archival, and science applications for a multi-petabyte satellite data archive. The ideal candidate is creative, adaptive, and flexible, is comfortable working within the command line environment, and would enjoy working on collaborative teams that iterate quickly., The Junior Software Developer position at ASF is an entry-level software engineering position. Applicants are expected to be familiar with a broad set of software development principles and techniques, even if they don’t have hands-on experience or mastery. This position will be assigned, on a semi-permanent basis, to one of several functional project teams based on alignment of skills, experience, and team needs., To thrive in this position, a Jr Software Engineer will utilize their software engineering experience and education to advance project team objectives, while staying curious and open-minded and learning from their colleagues. A successful Jr Engineer will ask questions, propose ideas, and write clean, understandable code, tests, and documentation.

Requirements

Important core capability pillars include Language, Automation, Science/GIS, and Cloud technologies. While no candidate is expected to be familiar with all capabilities, successful candidates will be able to demonstrate familiarity across multiple pillars.

This position will be expected to be comfortable programming in several languages or distinct frameworks. Applicable languages include Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Shell, Rust, and SQL. Additionally, familiarity with markup languages like HTML, CSS, JSON, YAML, or HCL would be desirable, as would the ability to work within common web frameworks like React and Angular.

A candidate should be comfortable working with version control systems like GitHub or GitLab, including utilizing workflow automations for enforcing code quality and dispatching automated deployments. Having the ability to build, extend, and troubleshoot automated tests is also important.

ASF’s primary mission involves making satellite data discoverable and accessible to the global community. Prior experience with GIS data, GIS frameworks, and geospatial libraries and tools is beneficial.

Project teams at ASF extensively utilize cloud technologies and container orchestration to provide scalable, durable, and repeatable execution environments. Experience working with AWS or other cloud platforms, or within Kubernetes, is extremely desirable.

Experience, or expertise in any one or set of these skills, is not a fundamental requirement. Instead, applicants should bring a broad familiarity with software engineering concepts, and, critically, a curiosity to learn and enthusiasm for building cool projects collaboratively.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in an information technology, software development, or science research field, or equivalent, and 3 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Benefits & conditions

This position is full-time, Grade 80 , term-funded, exempt, 12-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental, and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule , based on education and experience., This position is a term-funded position and is reviewed annually for contract renewal at the University’s discretion.

The report also contains fire statistics for any fires occurring in an On-Campus Student Housing Facility during the three most recent calendar years.
