Job description

DUTIES: Compiles and updates the public and private trails inventory and forestry information using state of the art computer technology including ArcGIS (Global Information System) computer mapping software, Field Data Recorders and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) for recording field data. Compiles research and field data used for the preparation of GIS layers, maps, graphics and other printed materials. Sources historic data sets such as old maps to extract trail and associated historic feature data to compile into a Geodatabase. Maintains a Geodatabase of captured data. Works with partner agencies to expand capacity and work in tandem on similar project. Field-corrects data by visiting trail sites and capturing GPS data. Analyses map findings and results. Assist the Na Ala Hele Trails and Access Program in monitoring and maintaining recreational trails. Must be able to drive project vehicles to work sites. Develops and implements various community outreach initiatives. Organizes and develops content for community outreach events and fairs, and community presentations (in-person and/or virtual). Designs and develops content for informational brochures, interpretive signage, and other media resources. Organizes and leads volunteer outings.

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university.

EXPERIENCE

One to three (1-3) years of experience working with, ArcGIS Pro software, and in heritage management. Experience must include working with outdoor recreation management in Hawai’i or similar location.

KNOWLEDGE

Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software. Knowledge of Hawaiian cultural history and ecology.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to write and comprehend planning documents and prepare maps. Good organizational, communication, and computer skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing. Skilled in the use of GIS software (ArcGIS Pro) and databases. Ability to use Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and PowerPoint), and other software programs to undertake analysis and reporting. Ability to use global positioning system (GPS) equipment. Ability to read maps and aerial photographs and document work. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai’i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to lift and carry up to forty (40) pounds unassisted., Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Geography, Communications, GIS, or other related fields. Working knowledge of software programs such as Adobe Creative Cloud suite. Working knowledge of the State GIS. Knowledge of spatial analysis, graphic representation, computer modeling, and use of relational databases. Ability to update software and provide office of Information Technology (IT) support. Experience interpreting 19th-century hand-written Hawaiian language documents. Working knowledge of Hawai’i land title laws. Ability to read and write Hawaiian Language.

Benefits & conditions

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), located in Kahului, Maui. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, and availability of funds.

MONTHLY SALARY: $4,220/Mon.
