Job description
Senior Unix Systems Engineer to join the Unix/Linux and Container Services team. The team is responsible for the design, support, security, and governance of enterprise Unix/Linux server and OpenShift container environments.
The position will support more than 2,000 physical and virtual AIX/Linux servers across on-premises and cloud environments. The engineer will contribute to infrastructure modernization initiatives involving OpenShift, Ansible Automation Platform, cloud infrastructure, automation, configuration management, and compute services.
This is a senior-level infrastructure engineering role with responsibilities spanning enterprise architecture, technical design, systems engineering, automation, capacity planning, troubleshooting, and project leadership. Core Responsibilities
- Provide senior-level technical expertise for enterprise systems architecture and infrastructure decisions.
- Design and implement solutions across Unix/Linux, public/hybrid cloud, Kubernetes/OpenShift, automation, and resiliency environments.
- Support large-scale AIX/Linux infrastructure across physical, VMware, on-premises, and cloud environments.
- Partner with application, infrastructure, business analyst, systems analyst, engineering, and service-provider teams on technical requirements and solution design.
- Develop and maintain technical architecture standards, guidelines, and documentation.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend solutions based on cost, risk, scalability, security, and business requirements.
- Participate in capacity management and scalability planning.
- Lead or contribute to enterprise-wide infrastructure projects.
- Mentor junior technical staff as needed.
- Support operational activities including troubleshooting, service requests, incident resolution, and on-call responsibilities.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, related field, or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of engineering/support experience with large, complex, highly available Unix/Linux environments.
- Experience with AIX, RHEL, Ubuntu, or similar enterprise Unix/Linux platforms.
- 5+ years in an enterprise technical role involving customer service, prioritization, troubleshooting, systems engineering, and service/workflow design.
- Ability to work independently and make technical decisions impacting enterprise operations.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
Preferred / Desired Qualifications
- Strong experience with Kubernetes and containerization, particularly OpenShift.
- Expert-level experience with Ansible Automation Platform (AAP).
- Cloud architecture/deployment experience with AWS, Azure, and/or Google Cloud Platform.
- Cloud certification preferred.
- Advanced Bash/KSH and/or Python scripting.
- Experience with high-performance Linux/AIX systems and performance tuning.
- IBM HMC/NIM experience.
- Linux Kickstart or AutoYaST experience.
- VMware experience.
- Strong networking knowledge related to Unix/Linux systems and applications.
- Strong security awareness and infrastructure security experience.
- Vendor management experience.
- Experience developing RFP/RFQ and SLA documentation.
- Project and technical team leadership experience.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation.
