Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Austin TX IT Innovation Center or Warren Michigan 3 days per week (T-W-Th), We are seeking an experienced Senior System Engineer to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will provide technical leadership for the architecture, integration, modernization, deployment, and operational health of enterprise systems that support engineering and validation workflows. You will work across application, infrastructure, cloud, data, security, and operations disciplines to deliver reliable, scalable, and maintainable technology solutions., The position is responsible for designing, integrating, deploying, and continuously improving production systems using repeatable industry best practices and in accordance with GM’s software development, cybersecurity, and operational methodologies. The Senior System Engineer will work hands-on across the system lifecycle, translating business and engineering needs into system requirements, architectures, infrastructure designs, implementation plans, and operational standards., The Senior System Engineer will contribute to and lead activities including system architecture, integration, automation, infrastructure as code, software transformation, testing, security assessment, observability, production readiness, incident response, documentation, and deployment. The role will also serve as a technical resource and mentor for engineers and will influence system standards, roadmaps, and engineering practices across partner teams., * Lead the end-to-end design and technical direction of scalable, secure, highly available systems spanning applications, cloud platforms, infrastructure, data stores, networks, integrations, and operational tooling.

  • Define system requirements, architecture decisions, integration patterns, technical roadmaps, and implementation plans aligned with business, engineering, cybersecurity, and compliance objectives.
  • Design and operate cloud-based systems across development, test, staging, and production environments using appropriate compute, storage, networking, database, and platform services.
  • Develop and maintain infrastructure as code and deployment automation to provision consistent, repeatable, and auditable environments.
  • Lead modernization and transformation of legacy software and infrastructure, including assessment, refactoring, re-platforming, migration, API enablement, service decomposition, technology-debt reduction, and retirement of obsolete components.
  • Evaluate architectural trade-offs and apply appropriate synchronous, asynchronous, event-driven, batch, and service-oriented design patterns.
  • Establish and improve CI/CD, release, configuration, environment-management, and change-management practices that enable safe and repeatable delivery.
  • Troubleshoot complex production issues, lead root-cause analysis and corrective actions, and participate in incident response, service recovery, and post-incident reviews.
  • Develop automation, scripts, utilities, and reusable system components to improve engineering productivity, operational efficiency, quality, and consistency.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, promote sound engineering practices, and raise the technical bar through reviews, coaching, standards, and knowledge sharing.
  • Lead small-to-medium-scale initiatives and provide technical leadership on larger programs, ensuring alignment with business and engineering goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Systems Engineering, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 7+ years of professional experience in systems engineering, platform engineering, infrastructure engineering, cloud engineering, software engineering, DevOps, SRE, or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience owning the architecture, delivery, and operational lifecycle of complex production systems with minimal guidance.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, system integration, networking, compute, storage, databases, APIs, authentication, authorization, and enterprise service management.
  • Proficiency in front-end technologies: HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, ReactNative, and Angular
  • Strong knowledge of back-end languages such as Java, Spring Boot, Quarkus, Hibernate, JPA, and SQL
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as Infrastructure as code, AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud, including cloud networking, identity, security, compute, storage, databases, and managed services.
  • Experience designing and supporting CI/CD pipelines and release automation using tools such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, or equivalent technologies.
  • Experience with legacy application and platform modernization, including code transformation, refactoring, re-platforming, cloud migration, API modernization, monolith-to-services migration, or retirement of obsolete technologies.
  • Understanding of secure software and infrastructure practices, including IAM, secrets management, encryption, vulnerability management, secure configuration, and cybersecurity controls.
  • Experience working with Agile, DevOps, SRE, IT service-management, or other iterative delivery and operational methodologies.
  • Experience supporting engineering, laboratory, manufacturing, validation, test, or other mission-critical technical environments is a plus.
