Job description

We are seeking a highly experienced Controls Field Technician with strong managerial capabilities to support mission-critical operations involving HPM/GLSS matrices for hazardous materials (hazmat) operations and controls. The ideal candidate will serve as a technical leader in the field-bridging hands-on controls expertise, operational oversight, and matrix-driven compliance. This role requires someone who can confidently navigate complex HPM/GLSS matrices governing hazmat operations and controls systems, while also providing leadership to field teams. As a strong bonus, the candidate will be able to review, evaluate, and recommend improvements to the computer programming/code that implements the information contained in these matrices., * Serve as the primary field expert on controls systems related to hazmat operations, ensuring systems function safely, reliably, and in accordance with applicable HPM/GLSS matrices.

  • Interpret, apply, and navigate HPM/GLSS matrices for hazmat operations and controls; translate matrix requirements into clear field procedures, work packages, and operational guidance.

  • Lead and coordinate field controls activities, including troubleshooting, commissioning support, system validation, and ongoing operational readiness for critical infrastructure.

  • Provide day-to-day managerial oversight of field technicians and trade partners involved in controls and hazmat-related scopes-assigning work, monitoring quality, enforcing safety protocols, and driving accountability.

  • Collaborate with construction management, operations, engineering, and safety teams to resolve field issues quickly while maintaining compliance with matrix-driven requirements.

  • Support commissioning, integrated systems testing, and turnover activities for controls systems tied to hazmat operations.

  • Document field conditions, deviations, and recommendations; escalate matrix interpretation or implementation issues as needed.

  • ( / Bonus) Review existing computer programming/code that implements HPM/GLSS matrix information; evaluate logic, identify gaps or inefficiencies, and suggest practical changes or improvements to enhance reliability, usability, or compliance.

Requirements

  • Extensive hands-on experience as a Controls Field Technician (typically 8-12+ years) in industrial, mission-critical, data center, or process environments involving complex control systems.

  • Proven ability to read, interpret, and operationalize technical matrices or structured compliance frameworks-specifically experience with (or strong aptitude for) HPM/GLSS-style matrices related to hazmat operations and controls.

  • Demonstrated managerial or lead-level skills: ability to direct field crews, coordinate multi-trade work, enforce standards, and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Strong working knowledge of industrial controls systems (PLC, DCS, BMS/BAS, SCADA, or similar), instrumentation, and field commissioning practices.

  • Solid understanding of hazardous materials operations, associated safety protocols, and the integration of controls systems that support hazmat handling, monitoring, or emergency response.

  • Ability to work independently in the field while providing clear leadership and documentation.

  • Excellent troubleshooting, problem-solving, and communication skills.

/ Bonus Qualifications

  • Direct experience reviewing, evaluating, or modifying computer programming/code (ladder logic, structured text, function block, or similar) that implements matrix-based logic or operational rules.

  • Familiarity with data center, hyperscale, or mission-critical facility environments and the unique controls/hazmat interface requirements that arise in those settings.

  • Relevant certifications (e.g., instrumentation & controls, hazmat operations/technician level, PLC programming, or equivalent).

  • Prior experience supporting owner’s representative, program management, or construction management teams (HPM-style environments ).
