Staff Backend Engineer

This is a company where Staff Engineers are expected to shape the technical direction of the platform, not just execute tickets., This is an architecture-level backend position reporting to the Engineering Manager, sitting at the heart of the platform team. You will take ownership of the core backend services that underpin the entire product… making decisions that directly affect reliability, performance and the experience of enterprise customers at scale.

You will lead significant platform initiatives, drive architectural improvements and act as a technical anchor for the team… including mentoring engineers and raising the overall quality of the codebase. Cross-functional collaboration with DevOps, product and engineering is a core part of this role, not an afterthought.

• Lead major platform initiatives from concept to delivery, including automated testing frameworks, data integration pipelines and new feature rollouts
• Design and build scalable, high-availability backend services in Go and Java that perform reliably at enterprise scale
• Build and maintain cloud-native infrastructure on GCP, using Docker and Kubernetes to scale with customer growth
• Drive observability across the stack: improve monitoring, alerting and incident response so customer-impacting issues are caught and resolved fast
• Mentor engineers at all levels, sharing architectural thinking and raising the standard of backend work across the team
• Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, DevOps and product to improve the platform holistically… not just the backend in isolation
• Contribute meaningfully to API design and performance tuning in a distributed systems environment where the stakes are high

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 5 years focused on backend development
• Advanced proficiency in Go or Java… with a genuine deep understanding of distributed systems, not just surface-level exposure
• Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure, ideally GCP, and containerised environments using Docker and Kubernetes
• Solid understanding of scalability, API design and performance tuning in production distributed systems
• Track record of leading significant technical projects end-to-end, with clear ownership and accountability
• Must be based in Canada or the USA with the right to work without sponsorship

Desirable / Nice to Have:

• Experience with server-side JavaScript (Node.js) and event-driven architecture including pub/sub patterns
• Background in software testing, test automation or QA tooling… you will understand the problem space immediately
