Job description

We’re hiring a talented Art Director/Senior Graphic Designer to join our creative team in the next few months. In this role, you’ll drive the visual direction of our branding and marketing work across print, web, and digital, from initial concept through final, client-ready execution. You’ll own the strategy behind our brand identities and campaigns, and make sure every piece meets our standards for quality and accuracy before a client ever sees it. We prefer candidates who live in Montgomery County, MD, or nearby, due to frequent in-person meetings and local events., As our Art Director/Senior Graphic Designer, you’ll play a pivotal role in our fast-growing agency, blending high-level creative strategy with hands-on design. This newly created position is for an experienced creative who sees the big picture but still loves the craft - you’ll shape visual direction, mentor our team, and serve as key quality control for all deliverables.

Working closely with our Creative Director and Project Managers, you’ll guide projects from concept to final execution, ensuring every piece meets our high standards for polish and accuracy. This role is perfect for a creative leader who wants to stay active in the design process while raising the quality of the work around them.

What Success Looks Like

In your first six months, you will be considered successful if you are:

  • A Trusted Quality Gatekeeper: You have seamlessly integrated into our review process, becoming the reliable set of eyes that catches errors before they ever reach a client.
  • A Force Multiplier for the Team: You provide actionable, constructive feedback that helps our designers grow and reduces revision rounds on key projects.
  • Hands-On & Strategic: You have balanced the “big picture” strategy with consistent, high-quality design work that reflects our agency’s standards and our clients’ missions.

Creative Strategy & Design Execution

  • Develop and implement the overall visual strategy and creative direction for client projects.
  • Conceptualize and design innovative branding solutions, marketing campaigns, and collateral across print, web, and social platforms.
  • Stay current on design trends, emerging creative technology, and AI tools, identifying practical ways to integrate them into internal processes and client work.
  • Present design concepts and rationale to clients and internal teams.

Quality Control & Production

  • Serve as the final quality-control reviewer for all client deliverables, ensuring design quality, content accuracy, brand consistency, accessibility, and production readiness.
  • Review work throughout the creative process, catch issues early, and provide clear, actionable feedback before projects move to client review.
  • Ensure final files are complete and production-ready, including proofreading, layout, image quality, specifications, links, and file setup.

Leadership & Project Management

  • Own multiple project deadlines, ensuring all deliverables are completed within agreed-upon timelines and budgets.
  • Mentor and provide art direction to the design team, facilitating growth and guiding their output.
  • Collaborate closely with the executive team, project managers, and clients to align creative work with project goals and objectives.

Requirements

Must-Haves

  • 8+ years in graphic design, branding, and marketing across print, web, and digital, including 3+ years in a leadership role
  • Online portfolio showing strong branding and marketing design work - no portfolio, no consideration
  • Expert in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Firefly, Express, Acrobat)
  • Sharp eye for catching design, content, and production issues before they reach the client
  • Solid grasp of offset printing and prepress: color management, file prep, press checks
  • Working knowledge of web/digital production: file formats, image optimization, specs for responsive, social, and digital ad platforms
  • Strong foundation in branding principles, typography, layout, and design trends across print and digital
  • Experience managing and mentoring designers, running production schedules, and delegating work
  • Track record of delivering branding and marketing campaigns on time and on budget
  • Active user of AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Firefly, and similar) who knows where they speed up creative work and where they don’t, without sacrificing judgment, accuracy, or client confidentiality

Nice-to-Haves

  • Figma or WordPress experience
  • Familiarity with ADA/WCAG accessibility standards
  • History of tying design work to measurable results like awareness, engagement, or sales
  • Strong communicator who can lead a team and hold their own in a remote setting
  • Curious about new creative tools and up for helping the team build practical habits around them
  • Any of: motion graphics, video editing, videography, photography, illustration, photo/color editing, web design/dev, social media marketing, * Bachelor’s degree in a related field, * Graphic Design: 8 years (Preferred)

Benefits & conditions

  • This is a full-time, non-exempt position with an annual salary of $95,000-$110,000 (based on experience), paid biweekly with benefits.

We work with organizations nationally, but focus on the Washington, DC Metro area.
