Job description

As a Staff Software Engineer at Walmart, you will lead the design and delivery of scalable platform capabilities, driving the full software development lifecycle with a focus on cloud-native architecture and AI/ML integration. You will provide technical leadership, mentor engineering teams, and collaborate across functions to translate complex business needs into actionable solutions. This role demands a commitment to engineering excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement, ensuring high-quality, maintainable software that supports Walmart’s strategic objectives and enhances developer productivity and customer experience.

About the team:

The Walmart Business (B2B) group delivers innovative solutions that empower organizations to meet their goals by leveraging Walmart’s extensive resources, including fulfillment centers, stores, merchants, and technology. The team focuses on building scalable, reliable software to enhance purchasing, onboarding, marketing, support, and operations. Emphasizing collaboration, technical excellence, and continuous improvement, the team ensures high-quality delivery aligned with business objectives and customer needs. This dynamic environment encourages innovation and impactful contributions across multiple disciplines, fostering growth and advancing Walmart’s expanding B2B capabilities.

What you’ll do:

  • Define and champion front-end architecture - architect scalable, maintainable, and resilient web systems for complex, high-traffic customer experiences; drive pragmatic technical decisions balancing performance, scalability, delivery speed, and long-term maintainability.
  • Build high-quality web experiences - design and develop performant, accessible, and responsive applications using React, TypeScript, HTML5, and CSS; set the quality bar for reliability, consistency, and customer impact.
  • Shape cross-team technical strategy - partner with Product, UX, backend, platform, and data engineering teams to translate ambiguous business problems into scalable solutions and drive alignment on technical direction and investments.
  • Set and evolve engineering standards - establish and drive best practices for component architecture, state management, API integration, testing, observability, performance, accessibility, and code quality across multiple teams.
  • Design for retail scale and innovation - build reliable, experimentation-ready experiences for high traffic and complex customer journeys; evaluate emerging technologies, prototype solutions, and identify technical risks early.
  • Provide organization-level technical leadership - lead architecture and design reviews, mentor engineers across levels, influence decisions beyond your immediate team, and raise the engineering bar across the frontend community.
  • Own end-to-end delivery - guide complex features from discovery and technical design through development, testing, deployment, observability, and production support. What you’ll bring

Requirements

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with demonstrated experience leading complex technical initiatives and driving architecture and technical direction across multiple teams.
  • Deep expertise in React, TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS, with strong knowledge of modern frontend development and rendering patterns.
  • Strong front-end architecture and system design skills, including component architecture, state management, caching, rendering strategies, bundle optimization, frontend modularization, and scalability for high-traffic applications.
  • Strong experience designing frontend/backend integration patterns and API contracts using REST; GraphQL design and consumption experience is a plus.
  • Deep understanding of web performance, browser behavior, accessibility, web security, responsive design, and engineering quality practices including unit, integration, and E2E testing, CI/CD, observability, debugging, and production support.
  • Proven technical leadership with the ability to drive architectural decisions, make sound tradeoffs under uncertainty, mentor engineers, influence without direct authority, and communicate technical strategy to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience with Node.js, cloud-native platforms (GCP, Azure), experimentation/A/B testing, design systems, micro-frontends/module federation, or AI-powered web experiences is a plus., Outlined below are the required minimum qualifications for this position.
