DevOps Engineer

As a DevOps Engineer, you’ll join an agile team to deliver software for Cloud Services and Dynamics, using best practices and industry standards. Collaborating with Senior Developers and stakeholders, you’ll build and configure solutions that meet business needs.

Your role includes supporting development processes-managing tools, testing environments, code control, and automating systems.

You’ll contribute to new service offerings for HMRC by supporting infrastructure deployment and management across programs, working closely with technical teams to deliver and maintain solutions quickly and efficiently.

Person specification

Role responsibilities can include any or all the following disciplines across the full range of duties:

• Manage time efficiently and prioritise workload independently.
• Develop, maintain, and share technical knowledge within the team.
• Collaborate with colleagues in the LEADS Guild to deliver solutions within specified timelines and coordinate with staff across Operations, Database, Test, and Business Teams.
• Support live systems as required, establish and maintain development environments, and resolve incidents and issues promptly.
• Escalate identified risks and issues to Senior Developers when necessary.
• Conduct impact analysis and provide estimates for enhancements or changes; participate in peer reviews and consult Senior Developers for clarification as needed.
• Build, test, document, and implement solutions according to the Delivery Framework and comply with team quality standards.
• Develop and test code modifications following program specifications and established testing strategies.
• Assist test teams during testing cycles and prepare documentation to support changes in the live environment.
• Release code changes into the production environment according to best practices and organisational procedures.

The role requires regular, rostered on-call and out-of-hours support for 24/7 services within 12 months, including support during infrastructure enhancements.

• Strong Linux/Unix system administration skills.
• Practical experience with at least one cloud platform (AWS/Azure).
• CI/CD pipeline development (GitHub, Gitlab CI Jenkins, Azure DevOps).
• Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation).
• Containerisation skills (Docker) and orchestration experience (kubernetes).
• Basic scripting (Python, Bash, PowerShell).
• Experience with monitoring and logging tools (Prometheus, Grafana, CloudWatch ELK, etc).
• Use of DevOps tools (Jira, Confluence, Artifactory).

• Ability to improve deployment workflows.
• Automation experience to minimise manual tasks.
• Understanding of secure infrastructure best practices.
• Support for reliability processes (incident response, reviews).
• Capability to mentor or share expertise within the team.
