Job description

As a Senior Software Developer, you will be a key contributor to the team, solving business-critical technical problems, providing technical leadership and helping to improve the quality, reliability and maintainability of our software. You will have the opportunity to challenge existing approaches, identify opportunities for improvement and help drive positive technical and organisational change.

You will typically work within an agile sprint team of 3-4 people, collaborating closely with other developers and colleagues across the wider business. While the role does not currently have direct reports, you will be expected to share your knowledge and experience, provide technical guidance and support the development of others within the team.

Your work will directly contribute to the continued development of Cambridge Cognition’s digital cognitive assessment technology, supporting researchers and healthcare organisations worldwide in improving outcomes for people affected by conditions impacting brain health.

Key technologies: React/TypeScript, Redux, cross-platform hybrid mobile (e.g. Capacitor/Ionic), Node.js, containers and Jest.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Write high-quality code and proactively contribute to both new and existing codebases.
  • Design, build and maintain features across our patient- and clinician-facing applications, including the screens and workflows used to administer, complete and configure cognitive assessments.
  • Work across browser-based applications and cross-platform hybrid mobile apps, including native functionality such as audio capture, offline data storage, background synchronisation and notifications.
  • Develop and maintain APIs and containerised services that support our client-facing applications, collaborating with teams responsible for backend services and shared platform systems.
  • Work closely with the System Architect and other senior engineers to help shape front-end and mobile architecture, ensuring technical decisions align with wider product and platform goals.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to other developers through code reviews, sprint planning and scoping, problem-solving and knowledge sharing.
  • Collaborate with Test Engineers to strengthen automated test coverage and continuously improve testing practices for regulated, trial-critical software.
  • Play a key role in improving our software architecture and development practices, making our code easier to maintain and our developers more effective, while carefully modernising legacy systems without disrupting live studies.
  • Partner with Product Managers to shape and deliver new features, balancing participant and user needs, accessibility and technical feasibility.
  • Develop software within a regulated environment, following appropriate standards and best practices for handling sensitive information in clinical settings.

The team you’ll be working in

You’ll be part of our small, close-knit software team, made up of people from a range of backgrounds including computer science, engineering, maths, chemistry, history and music. We value collaboration, curiosity and pragmatic problem-solving, with a shared focus on building high-quality technology that supports our customers and ultimately improves outcomes for people affected by conditions impacting brain health.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or similar field, or equivalent skills and experience.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of software engineering best practices (such as code reviews, source management, build and CI/CD processes, and testing).
  • Experience in contributing to tech strategy, leading projects and larger initiatives end-to-end and mentoring others.
  • At least 5 years commercial software development experience, with 3+ years using JavaScript technologies (ES6, TypeScript, React and Redux or equivalent state-management patterns), including automated testing at unit, integration and end-to-end level.
  • Comfortable working in a mature, architecturally varied codebase, for example, mixed class-component and hooks-based React, or mixed library and tooling versions across packages without introducing regressions.
  • Working knowledge of browser and WebView environments, and an appreciation of how behavior can vary across devices, operating systems and browser versions.
  • A careful and rigorous approach to work, especially when handling sensitive data.
  • Experience with the application of security and privacy best practices in software design., * Experience with media capture/playback (e.g. audio recording and review) or precision-timing UI, relevant to how our cognitive assessments are delivered.
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG) and/or experience with internationalisation/localisation, for participant- and clinician-facing applications.
  • Understanding of offline-first application design, local data persistence and background synchronisation with intermittent connectivity.
  • Experience building and shipping cross-platform mobile apps using a hybrid framework such as Capacitor or Ionic (or comparable experience with React Native), and/or native mobile development experience (Swift, Kotlin/Java).
  • Interest in, or experience with, applying AI-assisted tools within the software development lifecycle, mindful of regulatory compliance and the need to protect IP and customer data.
  • Experience with developing software under a formal quality management system.
  • Experience with Docker images and containers.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code concepts (e.g. Terraform).
  • Interest in healthcare or science, and in building software to improve research outcomes.
  • Interest in UI/UX design.
