Job description

Amazon is seeking talented engineers to help us develop the next generation of advanced robotics systems that will transform automation at Amazon’s scale. We’re building revolutionary robotic systems that combine AI, sophisticated control systems, and advanced mechanical design to create intelligent automation solutions capable of working safely alongside humans in dynamic environments. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of robotics and automation at an unprecedented scale, working with world-class teams pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in robotic manipulation, locomotion, and human-robot interaction.

The ideal candidate is a top-notch embedded software or firmware developer, passionate about building innovative solutions and enjoys solving problems in creative ways. As a part of the firmware development team, you will work on robotic control and safety systems to deliver features to enhance and maintain solutions. In addition to working on new products and ideas, you should demonstrate a strong ability to identify issues and show bias for action to drive resolution of these issues.

Key job responsibilities

  • Participate as an active member of the firmware team, developing and maintaining the firmware base of our robotic and safety systems.

  • Learn and master multiple components within the firmware environment, potentially including areas such as cameras, WiFi, security, navigation, sensors, and more.

  • Work with and lead teams of high-caliber firmware developers on critical products.

  • Share your perspective in design discussions and code reviews - speak up when you see it differently, then get behind the team’s decision and help make it work.

  • Demonstrate best engineering practices, documentation, and ownership.

A day in the life

As a Firmware Engineer, you’ll work with cross-functional teams to develop, test, and debug modern robotic systems. The work involves participating in design discussions, exploring new approaches to hard robotics problems, and implementing new product concepts and features. Testing ranges from writing automated tests that validate new features to hands-on bench and live testing to debug and root-cause issues on real hardware.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
  • 3+ years of embedded firmware development experience
  • Proficiency with C/C++ in an embedded context
  • Demonstrable hands-on experience with an RTOS or Embedded Linux
  • Good computer architecture fundamentals and experience with MPUs and MCUs.
  • Experience with integrating hardware over interfaces such as I2C/SPI/UART/PCIe or similar.
  • Experience with firmware development for control systems, or with image/visual processing, or with sensing devices such as cameras, radar, lidar, IMU, * Experience working in a collaborative team environment to deliver high-quality design solutions
  • Can work proactively and independently, meet deadlines, and deliver on projects and tasks
  • Proficiency in C/C++ required; Rust a plus
  • Experience with writing bare-metal firmware, including interrupt/ISR handling, and RTOS (e.g., FreeRTOS, Zephyr, etc.)
  • Experience developing Linux kernel modules or device drivers
  • Experience developing board support packages (BSPs), bootloaders, device trees, hardware abstraction layer (HAL) code, and DMA/peripheral driver configuration for custom hardware
  • Exposure to real-time fieldbus/motion protocols such as CAN, EtherCAT, or similar.
  • Exposure to DSP or FPGA-based development
  • Experience developing firmware for closed-loop feedback control algorithms with hard real-time system constraints or firmware for digital signal processing
  • Experience with firmware bring-up and debugging on custom hardware
  • A growing understanding of the product development lifecycle, including making sensible risk/effort trade-offs
  • Familiar with building solutions that scale
  • Hands-on experience developing products certified to IEC 61508 industrial safety standards, or similar standards such as medical, automotive, or avionics
  • Technical knowledge in at least one of: wireless, networking, or closed-loop control systems
  • Experience generating automated metrics to measure quality, effectiveness, or consistency
  • Clear written communication - able to translate technically complex issues into simple, easy-to-understand concepts
