Our client is embarking on a strategic migration of their core database infrastructure from Sybase (ASE) to PostgreSQL. This transformation is vital for the modernization and future-proofing of platforms that support over 130,000 healthcare professionals daily. As Database Architect, your expertise will directly impact the continuity, performance, and evolution of healthcare technology in Belgium, making your work essential to the lives of patients and clinicians alike. What You’ll Be Doing

• Design and define the target PostgreSQL architecture, ensuring optimal performance and scalability.
• Translate and redesign complex Sybase T-SQL patterns to PostgreSQL, maintaining data integrity and business logic.
• Optimize database performance through indexing, query tuning, and partitioning strategies.
• Develop and implement robust data validation and quality controls to prevent data loss during migration.
• Lead and support the cutover and migration strategy, ensuring a seamless transition.
• Act as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the migration team, providing guidance and technical leadership.
• Set up automation for database management, monitoring, and maintenance tasks.
• Support the existing Sybase environment during the transition phase, ensuring business continuity.
• Coach and mentor team members, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous improvement., * Freelance position with an initial duration of 6 months, with the possibility of extension.
• Hybrid work regime: 1 day per week onsite in Leuven, other days at a Cegeka office of your choice (Hasselt, Ghent, Antwerp).
• Willingness to participate in on-call duties or maintenance outside office hours as needed.
• Administrative processing through Cegeka; substantive work for our client.

• Proven experience as a Database Architect or Senior DBA, with a strong track record in large-scale migrations.
• Deep expertise in PostgreSQL architecture, design, tuning, and optimization.
• Hands-on experience with SQL dialect conversion, specifically Sybase to PostgreSQL.
• Demonstrated ability to optimize performance and troubleshoot complex database issues.
• Experience with database administration, automation, and monitoring in production environments.
• Knowledge of PostgreSQL extensions such as pg_logical and pg_vector is a plus.
• Familiarity with Linux/Unix environments and scripting (shell, tuning, automation).
• Experience with Sybase ASE is an advantage, but a willingness to learn is equally valued.
• Knowledge of Java environments is a plus.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
