Job description

Website Manager is responsible for managing and overseeing the Anthropology website redesign, working closely with the CAO, Department Chair, external agencies, internal departments at UC San Diego, and freelancers to execute the redesign plan and the digital strategy. The website will be built on the campus CMS platform, Cascade. The position is also responsible for all aspects of the Department of Anthropology website presence as well as other smaller sites required by our faculty and student groups and is responsible for enforcing governance guidelines.

The Website Manager is a seasoned expert when it comes to the latest social platforms, tools and technologies role, using an expert foundation in working with Content Management Systems (CMS), proven experience with website project management, information architecture, digital strategy, 508 accessibility standards, with knowledge of user experience (UX) and interface design standards (UI), including proficiency in HTML and CSS.

Using expert level skills, this experienced digital communications professional gathers requirements, designs and develops a variety of simple to complex website applications, ensuring optimal search engine performance, efficient and fast searching of metadata, responsive mobile designs and in support of social media platforms. Applying full understanding of industry best practices and organizational policies and procedures and using up to date on industry trends and best practices, this position demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques resulting in efficient, effective, innovative solutions.

The position uses expert skills to analyzes website navigation for ease of use, recommending design layout and content placement. The position works with the School of Social Sciences IT department and UC San Diego Workplace Technology Services (WTS) to improve usability, accessibility, provide quality digital images and maintain campus and Anthropology’s design standards and branding.

This position manages content including ongoing publishing of school news, relevant and timely faculty research, student and alumni accomplishments, press releases, and feature articles, etc. The position reviews various site content for tone, accessibility, usability, and quality and reviews, collects, and analyzes website user analytics and feedback in order to recommend appropriate enhancements. Additionally, the position provides direction, guidance and instruction to departments and staff in website management, web tools, and adherence to campus standards so that the user experience, particularly for prospective students, is clear, current, and easy to use.

Responsibilities include:

CMS - Provides analysis, consulting, and support assistance to business site owners and editors on content and technical issues. Creates and presents user training and materials in preparation for creating, maintaining, and self-publishing of their website content. Develops, manages, and oversees website governance guidelines.

Customer Service - Provides high-level customer service with timely and effective communications along with delivery of high-quality products and services.

Business Analysis - With a disciplined, data-driven approach, leverages data and insights on website performance to make recommendations and optimize the Anthropology website.

Requirements

  • Proven experience with website project management, information architecture, digital strategy, 508 accessibility standards, with knowledge of user experience (UX) and interface design standards (UI).
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related area such as Graphic Arts, Multimedia Design or Marketing/Communications with typically 3 years of experience working in website and content management and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Experience tracking and analyzing traffic. Experience with Accessibility tools for reporting sites not meeting compliance requirements. Thorough knowledge of content management systems and / or relevant web applications used for web production and organization-specific computer application programs. Proficient in the use and management of CMS applications.
  • Experience using common UX/UI tools, experience applying best practices and user-centered design and content skills. Expert proficiency in HTML and experience with CSS. Thorough experience using Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and content management systems (e.g., WordPress). Thorough skills to create clear, easy-to-navigate, informative, accurate, well-designed, and functional websites that provide web content consistent with the organization’s message and in keeping with management directives and client objectives.
  • Experience applying best practice solutions and tools for the creation, maintenance, and performance of images and videos. Strong experience using tools such as YouTube, PDFs, embedded forms, etc. Experience in photo, graphic, and video production and publishing. Thorough technical skills in computer applications for web production, image handling, publishing and design, illustration, presentation preparation, animation, web interaction, and / or other state-of-the-art web communication capabilities.
  • Demonstrated experience with services such as interactive web forms using a form building product such as Machforms or SharePoint. Demonstrated experience with web project management keeping users on task with deliverables associated with the web development process.
  • Experience advising end users/clients on updating websites using a CMS, instructing users on both the technical aspects of CMS and web content best practices. Experience advising others on web content and presentation; diplomatic communication and training skills.
  • Experience in written communications that express complex business or technical content in understandable terms. Specific experience and skill in writing and developing content for the Web; experience translating an organizational mission and goals to a targeted audience. Skilled in proofreading, editing, content style, accessibility, usability and tone. Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of design and user experience, including skill to design in an appealing, lively and relevant way.
  • Thorough skills to develop and implement original ideas and correctly identify and effectively solve problems. Experience in designing, recommending, and developing creative solutions for web-based issues.
  • Thorough interpersonal communication skills. Experience diplomatically advising internal/external clients on content, technical issues, and branding guidelines; client/customer service skills and experience. Excellent customer service skills. Experience working as part of a team, collaborating with colleagues; experience accepting feedback and suggestions from colleagues and others.

Benefits & conditions

Work Schedule: the schedule is hybrid, split between the La Jolla campus and working from home. It consists of two days a week (5 hours/day) on Wednesday and another negotiable weekday.
