Job description

The Senior Principal Electrical Engineer is a key individual contributor within the Medtronic Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) Electrical System Design Team. In this role, you will drive the definition, design, integration, and verification of complex mixed-signal electronics for active implantable cardiac devices and external patient systems. The individual will be an integral part of the R&D organization delivering innovative, life-saving technology of the highest quality to our patients.

This position is flexible to the strengths of the candidate and may comprise one or both of:

Technical Leadership: technical liaison to program management with dotted-line leadership of a team of electrical engineers

Hardware Block Owner: ownership of critical functional blocks with responsibility for design refinement, integration, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and verification of each block or sub-system.

You will help design, develop, and verify high-reliability, safety-critical electronics that directly impact patients’ lives.

The position is in Mounds View, MN (Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area).

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

Technical Leadership:

  • Provide technical leadership on complex R&D programs.
  • Support design and architectural tradeoffs, technical risk management, and drive issue-resolution from concept to launch.
  • Lead and mentor a team of electrical engineers through design, integration, characterization/troubleshooting, and verification phases.
  • Act as technical liaison to program management and manufacturing while supporting the cross-functional development team(s)

Hardware Block Owner:

  • Own key hardware blocks within the implantable or external system architecture including mixed-signal, analog, digital, RF, and/or PCB layout architecture and implementation designs.
  • Own hardware block requirements, design documentation, and verification strategy.
  • Perform detailed circuit analysis, simulation, characterization, and design margin assessment.
  • Lead root-cause investigations, debug complex hardware/firmware interactions, and propose robust design fixes and mitigations.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure successful integration and delivery of hardware solutions.

Core Responsibilities (common to both tracks):

  • Develop, analyze, and evaluate new product circuitry, including ultra-low-power analog, mixed-signal, and digital electronics.
  • Integrate electronics with firmware, mechanical, and system-level requirements to deliver complete product solutions.
  • Lead technical design reviews and influence key engineering decisions across the development lifecycle.
  • Develop test plans, characterization methods, and verification strategies for new designs (bench, automated, and system-level).
  • Define production test requirements and collaborate with manufacturing engineering on PCB and device assembly.
  • Support global manufacturing sites with troubleshooting, test failure analysis, and product improvements.
  • Develop and validate test environments, including automation frameworks and emulators for product evaluation.
  • Decompose system requirements into implementable hardware requirements and ensure compliance with safety-critical and reliability standards.
  • Mentor junior engineers and influence best practices in design rigor, simulation methodology, and documentation.

Requirements

  • Requires a Baccalaureate degree and minimum of 10 years of relevant experience OR Master’s degree with a minimum of 8 years relevant experience OR PhD with 6 years relevant experience.

Preferred Skills:

  • Demonstrated technical leadership or principal-level ownership of complex electrical designs.
  • Strong experience with PCB design methodology, CAD tools, and manufacturing processes.
  • Proficiency in analog and mixed-signal circuit design, analysis, and debug.
  • Experience designing for high-reliability or safety-critical applications (medical, aerospace, automotive safety, etc.).
  • Strong hands-on debugging skills: oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, RF analyzers, low-current and low-noise measurement tools.
  • Circuit simulation expertise (PSPICE, LTspice, or similar).
  • RF design or RF performance evaluation experience.
  • Programming/scripting in Python, C/C++, or LabVIEW for test automation and data analysis.
  • Experience with Class III medical device development, verification, and validation.
  • Familiarity with applicable standards (ISO 14708, IEC 60601, etc.)
  • Experience with system modeling in MATLAB.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to influence across disciplines.

For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.
