Job description

We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Backend to join Procore’s Financial Platform and Insights Division. In this role, you’ll own and lead critical backend initiatives, evolve high-throughput distributed architectures, and elevate Procore’s core engineering ecosystem. The primary goal of this role is to scale resilient financial management systems and drive AI-enhanced software solutions for our global customer base.

As a Staff Software Engineer, you’ll partner with Product Managers, Systems Architects, and Engineering Leadership to design scalable services, manage event-driven data streams, and build seamless React user interfaces. Use your expertise in distributed systems, backend development with Java and Ruby, and AI-driven software development to deliver high-impact software that directly influences how communities around the world build schools, hospitals, and homes. This position reports into the Engineering Manager and will be a hybrid role of 2 days per week in our Austin, TX office. We’re looking for someone to join us immediately.

What you’ll do:

  • Architect, build, and scale resilient distributed services and backend infrastructure using Java and Ruby.
  • Design, implement, and maintain high-throughput data streams and message queues using Apache Kafka.
  • Optimize PostgreSQL databases through complex schema design, query performance tuning, and transactional data modeling.
  • Develop and integrate intelligent backend features and workflows leveraging modern AI technologies.
  • Build and maintain interactive, high-performing frontend application components using React.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional product, design, and architecture teams to drive a modern service-oriented architecture.
  • Drive full operational ownership of production services, including deployment, observability, monitoring, and distributed tracing.
  • Write robust, well-tested code following Test-Driven Development (TDD) principles to ensure system reliability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical work experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in backend development using Object-Oriented Programming fundamentals in Java.
  • Proven experience designing, building, and operating event-driven distributed systems with Apache Kafka.
  • Deep technical proficiency in PostgreSQL, including indexing strategies, query optimization, and schema design.
  • Proven experience building interactive web applications using React and modern JavaScript or TypeScript is a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience building software with AI capabilities or integrating AI technologies into development workflows.
  • Strong knowledge of microservice architecture, RESTful API design, and Test-Driven Development (TDD).
  • Pragmatic, curious mindset with a strong ability to evaluate trade-offs between performance, scalability, and business goals.

Benefits & conditions

140,960.00 - 193,820.00 USD Annual

This role may also be eligible for Equity Compensation and/or Bonus Incentive Compensation. Procore is committed to offering competitive, fair, and commensurate compensation. Actual compensation will be based on a candidate’s job-related skills, experience, education or training, and location.
