Job description

Overland AI has secured funding from prominent defense tech investors including 8VC and Point 72, and built trusted partnerships with DARPA, the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, and Special Operations Command. Backed by eight-figure contracts across the Department of Defense, we are strengthening national security by iterating closely with end users engaged in tactical operations., We are looking for an Embedded Software Engineer to join our vehicle production team and own the integration between hardware and software on our autonomous ground vehicles. You will support the architecture, design, and implementation of high-performance embedded systems that connect our autonomy stack to the physical vehicle platform.

This is a deeply hands-on role on the production floor - you’ll bridge the gap between firmware, electrical systems, and autonomy software, working alongside a collaborative team of mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to find and develop the right solutions for mission-critical problems. You will take ownership of the full lifecycle of embedded systems: from requirements definition and architecture through development, testing, and end-to-end technical support. If you’re passionate about tackling hard problems at the intersection of hardware and software for autonomous vehicles, this is your chance to make a lasting impact.

Responsibilities

  • Own the architecture, design, and development of embedded firmware for vehicle subsystems and autonomy hardware interfaces
  • Develop firmware in C/C++ for microcontrollers and embedded compute platforms on our autonomous vehicles
  • Own the hardware-software integration process: bring up new boards, sensors, and peripherals and ensure reliable communication with the autonomy stack
  • Debug and troubleshoot issues that span electrical, firmware, and software boundaries, often hands-on with the vehicle
  • Write and execute test plans for validation, performance characterization, and production acceptance
  • Collaborate with electrical engineering to select microcontrollers and peripherals, review schematics, and validate hardware designs
  • Define and implement communication protocols and interfaces between vehicle subsystems (CAN, Ethernet, serial, etc.)
  • Develop diagnostics, health monitoring, and fault-handling firmware to support field reliability
  • Assess design risks and develop mitigation strategies across hardware and firmware boundaries
  • Create and maintain clear technical documentation including interface specifications, test procedures, and integration guides
  • Interface with internal teams to conduct design reviews for hardware/electronic systems and code reviews for firmware
  • Support production builds by developing tools, test fixtures, and automated validation for embedded systems
  • Drive continuous improvement of embedded systems through hands-on experience and feedback from test and production teams

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field - or equivalent practical experience
  • 3+ years of applied experience in firmware or embedded software development, * Strong C/C++ firmware development in bare-metal or RTOS environments with experience across multiple ARM Cortex-M architectures (e.g., STM32, NXP S32K, TI TMS570) and/or FPGA platforms
  • Proficiency integrating microcontrollers with analog and digital sensors, debugging across hardware-software boundaries using JTAG, SWD, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers
  • Working knowledge of common bus protocols (CAN, SPI, I2C, UART, RS-485, Ethernet) and ability to read and interpret electrical schematics
  • Experience with embedded Linux, board support packages, and robotics middleware such as ROS - particularly on automotive or vehicle platforms with drive-by-wire systems
  • End-to-end electronics experience from requirements through schematic, layout, fabrication, and hardware bring-up, including analog circuit design and/or power electronics
  • Experience bringing hardware from prototype through production in a fast-moving environment; hands-on, floor-oriented problem solver comfortable working directly on vehicles
  • Strong cross-functional communication skills with a bias for action and natural curiosity about how systems work end to end

Benefits & conditions

Pay Range:

Embedded Engineer: $142,000 - $161,000/annually

Overland AI believes in creating a work environment that you look forward to embracing every day.

  • Equity compensation
  • Best-in-class healthcare, dental, and vision plans
  • Flexible PTO
  • 401k with company match
  • Parental leave.

About the company
