Grid Systems Consultant - 1898 & Co. (Kansas City)

1898 & Co., a division of Burns & McDonnell, is seeking a Grid Systems Consultant to support the delivery of comprehensive grid management systems consulting services for electric utility clients. The primary responsibility of this role is to contribute to the successful execution of service offerings that modernize operations, enhance reliability, and adopt advanced grid technologies to build a resilient, future-ready grid., The Grid Systems Consultant will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to assist clients through every phase of their modernization journey. This includes everything from strategy development and business case analysis to requirements definition and program management. A key focus of this position will be supporting the system integration and implementation services for advanced technology solutions. This involves the design, build, testing, and deployment of systems for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Outage Management (OMS), with a particular emphasis on Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS). The ideal candidate will have experience with core ADMS applications, including Power Flow, State Estimation, Fault Location, Isolation, and Service Restoration (FLISR), and Volt-Var Optimization (VVO).

Key responsibilities also include gathering and analyzing client requirements for these advanced applications, supporting the development of project roadmaps, facilitating workshops, preparing technical documentation, and providing operational support post-deployment.

Success in this role requires strong foundational knowledge of grid management technologies, especially in the domain of distribution management. Strong analytical and communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a client-facing environment are essential. The Grid Systems Consultant plays a vital part in ensuring project quality, upholding best practices, and embracing continuous improvement, ultimately helping utilities realize sustainable, innovative outcomes in their grid transformation programs., * Support the delivery and implementation of SCADA, OMS, ADMS, and DERMS solutions under the direction of senior team members, with a strong focus on the design, configuration, and testing of ADMS applications such as Power Flow, State Estimation, FLISR, and VVO.

• Support the build, validation, and maintenance of the utility’s distribution network model to ensure the accuracy required for advanced applications like Power Flow, State Estimation, and FLISR.
• Contribute to troubleshooting, field support, and project coordination activities aimed at optimizing and maintaining advanced ADMS applications, including Power Flow, State Estimation, FLISR, VVO, and DER integration.
• Assist in the commissioning, testing, and deployment of grid management systems, with specific responsibilities for site acceptance testing and operational readiness validation for ADMS functionalities.
• Participate in requirements gathering, data analysis, and business process documentation to inform the specific design and configuration of client ADMS and DERMS solutions.
• Contribute to the full project lifecycle, including analysis, design, build, configuration, and testing activities, with a focus on defect triage and deployment support for advanced distribution applications.
• Prepare and maintain quality deliverables, including detailed technical documentation for ADMS configurations, system test scripts, and client training materials.
• Support the facilitation of workshops, meetings, and training sessions with clients and project stakeholders, particularly for topics related to advanced ADMS functionality.
• Assist with software selection activities for ADMS and DERMS, including specific requirements definition for applications like FLISR and VVO, RFP development, vendor evaluation, and solution demonstrations.
• Collaborate on project planning, budgeting, and execution tasks-supporting the development of detailed project plans, tracking milestones, and preparing documentation for status updates.
• Aid in the development and implementation of change management and business process design activities to ensure successful adoption of new ADMS tools and operational workflows.
• Contribute to operational support and post-deployment activities, including user training, documentation updates, and ongoing client assistance for ADMS applications.
• Foster teamwork and maintain effective communication with internal teams, clients, and vendors.
• Help to ensure compliance with company safety protocols and site policies.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support project delivery, team objectives, and client success.

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business, computer science, information technology, or a related field is preferred.
• Applicable work experience may be substituted for the degree requirement.
• Minimum 5 years working in the Electric Utility Industry or equivalent.
• Experience with electric utility clients implementing and integrating operational systems such as OMS, DMS, ADMS, AMI, Distribution Automation, and Distributed Energy Resources (DER) is preferred.
• Experience with the Emerson / AspenTech monarch platform preferred.
• Strong ability to influence or lead project execution.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience with leading-edge applications (s), operations technology, and solutions utilizing various industry standard tools.
• Experience with a variety of project execution methodologies, including but not limited to Waterfall and Agile.
