Automation and Data Engineer

VA depends on secure Information Management and Information Technology (IM/IT) systems to deliver services to Veterans and protect mission information and technology assets.

The Automation and Data Engineer designs, builds, integrates, and maintains data and workflow automation that supports enterprise cybersecurity engineering and operations. The role develops secure tool integrations, data pipelines, normalized schemas, orchestration workflows, and measurement capabilities that reduce manual effort while preserving data quality, traceability, and operational reliability. The engineer works with cybersecurity, architecture, infrastructure, analytics, and compliance teams to move security data and actions across approved VA platforms., * Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain secure automation and data integration solutions for cybersecurity tools and engineering workflows.

• Translate operational and security requirements into tool-to-tool and Application Programming Interface (API) integrations, data mappings, schemas, transformation rules, triggers, and dependencies.
• Build and maintain reliable data pipelines that ingest, validate, cleanse, reconcile, enrich, and route security telemetry and asset data across approved environments.
• Define and apply data normalization, labeling, and categorization standards for events, assets, and operational status indicators so information can support correlation, analytics, and reporting.
• Develop Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response (SOAR) playbooks, scripts, scheduled workflows, and approved autonomous workflows that reduce manual effort and improve response consistency.
• Implement error handling, logging, access controls, audit trails, testing, rollback, and recovery mechanisms for production automations and integrations.
• Maintain automation code, workflow metadata, configuration, dependencies, and version history in an approved version-controlled repository.
• Create validation test cases and monitor pipeline health, data latency, completeness, accuracy, availability, resource use, and integration failures.
• Measure and report automation coverage, time saved, error and rework rates, detection accuracy, false-positive trends, incident response time, and tool efficiency.
• Prepare and maintain integration specifications, data flow diagrams, schema documentation, troubleshooting guides, runbooks, and knowledge-transfer materials.
• Support cybersecurity tool onboarding, configuration changes, upgrades, and retirement activities while protecting VA-sensitive data and credentials.
• Collaborate with cybersecurity engineers, data owners, system administrators, architects, analysts, and governance stakeholders to resolve data and workflow issues.
• Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Software Engineering, Cybersecurity, Information Systems, or a related field. Additional relevant experience may be substituted for a degree consistent with contract requirements.
• Certification meeting Information Assurance Technical Level III, Information Assurance Management Level III, or Information Assurance System Architects and Engineers Level III requirements, as applicable to the assigned duties.
• Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in data engineering, software integration, automation, or cybersecurity engineering, including at least 5 years supporting enterprise or Government environments comparable in size and complexity to VA. An advanced degree in a related field may substitute for up to 2 years of required experience.
• Demonstrated experience developing and supporting production integrations using APIs, structured data formats, authentication mechanisms, transformation logic, and automated workflows.
• Experience with data modeling, schema mapping, data quality controls, telemetry normalization, validation testing, and troubleshooting across heterogeneous systems.
• Experience scripting or programming with technologies such as Python, PowerShell, SQL, JavaScript, or equivalent languages used for enterprise automation and data processing.
• Experience with version control, secure coding practices, role-based access, secrets management, logging, auditability, and deployment controls.
• Ability to produce clear technical specifications, data flow diagrams, runbooks, test evidence, and performance metrics.
• Must be authorized to work for any employer in the United States.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain the required security clearance or suitability determination., * Experience with SOAR platforms, security information and event management, ServiceNow, cloud services, data integration platforms, or enterprise cybersecurity tool ecosystems.
• Experience with STIX/TAXII, MITRE ATT&CK mappings, configuration management, DevSecOps pipelines, or automated security control validation.
• Previous VA experience.

Pay: $120,000.00 - $135,000.00 per year, * 401(k)
