Software Developer (Operations Research)

Client Corporation is seeking a highly motivated Operations Research Software Developer to design, develop, and support advanced decision-support systems that improve transportation planning, network performance, operational efficiency, and service reliability across the railroad network. This role combines full-stack software development, operations research, transportation analytics, and data visualization. The ideal candidate can translate complex business and operational challenges into scalable analytical solutions and contribute across the full software development lifecycle, from requirements gathering and solution design through testing, deployment, maintenance, and production support. Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and implement web-based transportation planning and decision-support applications.
• Develop analytical solutions supporting network planning, service design, operational performance, and disruption management.
• Create intuitive, data-driven user interfaces and visualization tools that support effective decision-making.
• Design, develop, and maintain ETL processes and integrated data repositories supporting analytical applications.
• Provide production support, maintenance, troubleshooting, and continuous enhancement of existing operations research applications.
• Collaborate with business partners, railroad operations teams, analysts, and software developers to identify opportunities for process improvement and operational efficiency.
• Support application testing, deployment, implementation, and ongoing production activities.

• 1-3 years of full-stack software development experience using established development best practices, including application design, testing, deployment, and production maintenance.
• Experience developing or implementing decision-support systems using operations research methodologies.
• Experience developing enterprise applications using Java-based technologies.
• Strong software development skills with Java, Python, and related technologies.
• Proficiency with JavaScript, React, HTML5, and CSS for modern web application development.
• Strong SQL skills and experience working with relational databases.
• Experience with Linux/UNIX operating systems and development environments.
• Experience designing complex, data-driven user interfaces and visualization solutions.
• Experience leveraging AI tools and technologies.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, written, and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Skills & Experience

• Knowledge of railroad operations, transportation planning, and network design principles.
• Experience applying operations research or advanced analytics within transportation, logistics, or network planning environments.

Education Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Operations Research, Information Systems, or another related quantitative discipline.
