Associate Design Engineer

Primary functions of the Associate, Design Engineer include the engineering design and development activities required to meet project requirements as defined by the Product Management team. The incumbent will help to coordinate the workflow of the design team in order to meet milestone dates for those projects assigned. The design team may consist of one or more individuals from Manufacturing Engineering, Procurement, Service, Quality Assurance and Engineering Services. The incumbent utilizes in-house consultation of various colleagues and fellow Engineers to assure specifications are met and receives guidance from Manufacturing to ensure design efficiency and manufacturability. Depending on the scope of the project, the Associate, Design Engineer may be responsible for leading the development team. This engineer is responsible for attending technical design review meetings and providing technical design inputs. In order to meet the expectations of this position, the incumbent must be able to follow standard design and development procedures and recommends updates to design and development procedures as necessary. The incumbent must continually improve his or her knowledge of existing Valmont products and keep up to date on manufacturing capabilities.

Essential Functions:

• Responsible for developing new and innovative designs to meet the needs of customers
• Work with a cross-functional team in a collaborative environment to ensure the highest quality designs and product
• Participate in technical design review meetings and conference calls and provide mechanical design direction and input
• Follow standard design and development procedures, recommending updates to design procedures when needed
• Coordinate the activities of the Engineering Technicians and participate in testing activities
• Responsible for implementing all phases of project plans and monitoring progress per established schedule and budget targets
• Responsible for maintaining good relationships with customers, field personnel and other Valmont departments to ensure the most efficient and inclusive working environment
• Responsible for the detailed project documentation required by Valmont Product Development procedures
• Responsible for advancing personal technical competence in order to continue advancing product and capabilities
• Responsible for reviewing and providing inputs to the product development procedure to ensure continuous improvement
• Responsible for coordinating and conducting laboratory or field testing as situations dictate
• Provide technical support to other departments as required toward meeting the needs of our customers
• This position reports to the Director of Engineering.
• This role may require up to 10% travel (domestic or international)
• Work with individuals from Manufacturing Engineering, Production, Operations, Service and Engineering Services to ensure design efficiency and manufacturability
• Collaborate with our extensive dealer network to support Engineering initiatives as needed

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Agricultural Engineering
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
• Mechanical aptitude with strong analytical, organizational, communication, and teamwork skills
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
• Experience with 3D CAD and Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
• Willingness to travel up to 10%, including international travel
• Demonstrated initiative, integrity, and passion for solving problems and delivering results

Preferred Qualifications:

• Project management experience
• Experience with Creo (Pro/E), ANSYS, RISA 3D, Adobe Acrobat, QAD, and Windchill
• Knowledge of steel metallurgy, welding processes, and fatigue design of welded steel structures
• Familiarity with mechanized irrigation systems
• Engineer in Training (EIT) certification with interest in obtaining PE licensure
• Experience working with Agile methodologies
