Lead Data Engineer

Work you’ll do

As a Lead Data Engineer on the AI & Engineering team, you will be responsible for:

• Leading the design, development, testing, and deployment of artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions supporting health eligibility, benefits, and human services platforms
• Managing teams that build retrieval-augmented and multimodal artificial intelligence capabilities, including document intake and verification, natural-language access to program data, and assistive tools for eligibility staff
• Owning model evaluation and quality activities, including grounding, accuracy measurement, regression testing across prompt and model changes, and release gating based on measured results
• Developing and managing data pipelines, model training workflows, and production-grade application components that support artificial intelligence-enabled products
• Collaborating with engineers, data scientists, policy analysts, and program stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable technical solutions, guide technical decisions, and mentor junior practitioners

• Bachelor’s degree
• 10+ years of experience supporting technical, data, and artificial intelligence engineering engagements
• Experience integrating large language models into enterprise applications
• 5+ years of experience with Java, Python, artificial intelligence/machine learning, cloud, and DevOps technologies
• Ability to travel 15-20%, on average, based on the work you do and the clients and industries/sectors you serve
• Limited immigration sponsorship may be available

Preferred:

• Experience leading engineering teams supporting enterprise data and artificial intelligence initiatives
• Experience with retrieval-augmented generation and multimodal artificial intelligence solutions
• Experience supporting health eligibility, benefits, or human services platforms
• Experience designing and maintaining integrations with state or federal interface partners
• Experience translating eligibility policy requirements into executable technical logic
• Experience with model evaluation, regression testing, and release gating

This compensation range is specific to California and takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. At Deloitte, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $119,000 to $198,400.
