Software Developer - Space Domain

Peraton is seeking a Software Developer to support a customer in Colorado Springs, CO, supporting the Space Weather Analysis Forecasting Service (SWAFS) GovCloud solution. This role is suited for an experienced developer who brings strong hands-on coding skills and ideally some exposure to software architecture concepts. The ideal candidate is a solid, self-sufficient developer who can contribute meaningfully to complex systems, work within an Agile team, and grow into broader technical responsibilities over time.

What you’ll do:

• Contribute to the design and documentation of software architecture for the SWAFS GovCloud solution, including system components, data flows, and integration patterns
• Translate high-level engineering and mission requirements into actionable architectural designs, interaction flows, and development artifacts
• Collaborate with Senior Architects, Chief Systems Engineers, and Product Owners to align technical designs with program objectives
• Support decomposition of architectural requirements into consumable development stories and sprint-level tasks
• Participate in all phases of the software development lifecycle: definition, design, implementation, unit testing, and deployment
• Write and review application code primarily in Java; support and guide developers on coding standards and architectural patterns
• Establish and promote design guidelines, best practices, and coding standards across the development team
• Evaluate and recommend frameworks, tools, and technologies to meet system requirements
• Participate in peer code and design reviews; provide constructive technical feedback
• Support REST API design and data/service integration architecture feeding into SaaS applications
• Contribute to CI/CD pipeline design and DevSecOps best practices
• Assist in defining structured practices in source code management, build and release management
• Produce clear and concise architectural documentation, decision records (ADRs), and technical specifications
• Support customer-facing technical presentations of architecture and system functionality

• Associate’s degree in a related field and 7+ years of relevant software development experience; OR Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field with 5+ years of relevant software development experience; OR Master’s degree with 3+ years of relevant experience. An additional four (4) years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree
• At least 3 years of progressive software development experience
• Strong knowledge of software design principles, development best practices, and applicable frameworks
• Demonstrated software development experience using Java
• Experience with Spring and Spring Kafka, or comparable event-driven messaging technologies
• Experience using GitLab for source control, collaboration, and/or CI/CD
• Strong hands-on experience developing and executing software test plans, procedures, and cases
• Experience supporting deployments to high-side or restricted-access environments
• Experience troubleshooting, monitoring, and supporting software in operational environments
• Experience documenting, tracking, and resolving software defects and bugs
• Experience supporting software demonstrations, technical reviews, or customer-facing events
• This position requires the candidate possess a minimum of Top-Secret clearance with SCI eligibility. The candidate must maintain the clearance, * Active TS/SCI clearance
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, including experience working across a larger Software Architecture team
• Experience in a Software Architect, IT Systems Architect, or equivalent role is a plus but not required
• Recent experience supporting the United States Space Force, Department of Defense, space systems, satellites, or similarly complex aerospace systems
• Experience with high-TRL systems and transitioning software from development and test environments into operations
• Experience with automated testing, DevSecOps, continuous integration, or continuous delivery
• Experience with UML, DoDAF, or comparable modeling and engineering methodologies
• Experience designing or deploying applications in an AWS environment
• Experience leading or mentoring software, test, integration, or operations teams
• Experience using AI-assisted development or software engineering tools
• AWS Certified Solutions Architect certification or equivalent cloud architecture experience

Peraton offers enhanced benefits to employees working on this critical National Security program, which include heavily subsidized employee benefits coverage for you and your dependents, 25 days of PTO accrued annually up to a generous PTO cap and eligible to participate in an attractive bonus plan, Target Salary Range: $104,000 - $166,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position. Salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the individual’s experience, education, knowledge, skills, and competencies, as well as geographic location and business and contract considerations. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
