Under the administrative oversight of the Senior Network Engineer, incumbent maintains, supports, updates, upgrades, tests, and troubleshoots all layers of the complex physical and logical campus network infrastructure; cable plant, fiber and copper, telecommunications rooms, off campus sites, private departmental networks, T-1 and DSL circuits, UPS, Core and Edge network switches, Core and distribution routers, Wireless Network Connectivity, Wide Area Network connectivity, packet shaping bandwidth management, network monitoring and management systems, Network Security Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), Network Security Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS), Firewalls, and Virtual Private Networks (VPN)., * Under the administrative supervision of the Senior Network Engineer, incumbent: designs, operates, support, monitoring, trend analysis, forecasting, and testing of the Campus Local Area Network/Wide Area Network consisting of a full range on network equipment.

• Monitoring and maintenance are performed using data gathered by Ciscoworks, WCS, Network Observer, Fluke fiber and copper network analyzers and other analysis and reporting devices.
• Installs hardware and software network components to provide optimal quality to end-users.
• Provides technical and engineering expertise for all phases of the university’s enterprise Wi-Fi 802.11 network lifecycle including architecture, design, placement surveys, feasibility studies, deployment strategies, precise documentation, troubleshooting, and operations management. This includes wireless access points (7oo+), controllers/routers (15), WiSM chassis’, 802.lx user authentication, and end user device support.
• Identify and mitigate radio interference to improve user data throughout, configure associated VLANs and edge switches and document access point placement for use on beat maps.
• Develop procedures to ensure minimal network downtime and loss of employee/student productivity.
• Configure monitor, troubleshoot and deploy Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS) at each of 133 network closets. These range in size from 750VA to 16KVA. Included are staggered tri-annual battery refreshes, functional load testing, battery discharge, and calibration.
• Prepares documentation and training to support network infrastructure for user support including Help Desk personnel, Instructional Support Specialist and Tier II technicians.
• Configuring and monitoring security and packet shaping devices. This includes but is not limited to Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS), and Procera packet shaper. This function is provided in support of the Information Security Group as it relates to security issues such as attempted hacks, system break-ins, virus propagation and infected systems. It includes turning security systems to reduce false positives and to increase accuracy and providing notifications to departmental and campus constituents as to attempts against systems they are responsible for.
• Contributes to the success of EIU by performing other duties and assisting with projects, as assigned.
• Supervision and training of student workers.

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Any one or any combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the following categories:

• College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent: o 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months) o Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months) o 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months) o Bachelor’s Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)

• Work experience in IT-related functions, such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field.
• Based on position requirements, additional education, training, and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position may be required.

• Ability to oversee and coordinate activities of user groups.
• Ability to effectively communicate with other colleagues, supervisors, administrative staff, and other IT users.

• Ability to effectively communicate and professionally interact with all staff levels.

The core work hours of this position are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.

Starting Salary/Pay Rate Range

Current starting salary range for this position is $60,000 - $75,000, The Civil Service Examination for this classification is a credentials assessment. No participation other than submission of applicant materials is required from qualified applicants.
