Director, Digital Software Engineering

The Director, Digital Software Engineering is responsible for the leadership, delivery, modernization, and ongoing operational support of Versant Health’s digital application portfolio, including member, provider, client, and partner digital experiences. This role provides strategic and operational leadership for software engineering for multiple applications including member, provider, and client portals, member mobile applications, and APIs supporting these applications while ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture, cybersecurity, compliance, and business objectives.

The Director is accountable for driving technology modernization, Agile delivery transformation, engineering process excellence, engineering quality practices, and continuous improvement across the Digital technology portfolio. This role leads cross-functional teams responsible for designing, developing, testing, deploying, and supporting scalable digital solutions that improve member and provider experiences and support organizational growth objectives.

Additionally, the Director develops and executes technology roadmaps, resource plans, delivery strategies, and modernization initiatives that enable innovation, operational excellence, and accelerated business value delivery. The role partners closely with Product, Architecture, Infrastructure, Security, Data & Analytics, and business stakeholders to ensure successful execution of strategic priorities.

• Lead Digital Software Engineering for Portals, Mobile Applications, and API Engineering teams, including talent acquisition, coaching, mentoring, performance management, succession planning, and organizational development.
• Develop high-performing teams by establishing clear expectations, supporting professional growth, fostering accountability, and creating an inclusive culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning.
• Coach and develop managers, team leads, and individual contributors to strengthen technical capabilities and support career growth.
• Provide regular coaching, feedback, and performance guidance to strengthen technical capabilities, improve delivery effectiveness, and support associate engagement, retention, and career progression.
• Lead the execution and continuous improvement of software delivery practices within the Digital Applications organization to improve delivery effectiveness and quality outcomes.
• Ensure Digital application teams adhere to established engineering standards, development methodologies, and governance practices.
• Partner with Quality Engineering teams to support testing, release readiness, and software quality objectives for Digital applications.
• Partner with Product Management, Architecture, and business stakeholders to prioritize roadmaps, align resources, manage dependencies, and maximize business value delivery.
• Support modernization initiatives for Digital applications and integrations in partnership with Architecture, Infrastructure, and Security teams.
• Oversee the design, development, deployment, and support of highly available, secure, scalable, accessible, and maintainable digital applications and services.
• Establish engineering metrics, delivery KPIs, quality measures, and operational performance indicators to drive data-informed continuous improvement.
• Promote adoption of DevSecOps practices, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, secure coding, observability, and engineering best practices across development teams.
• Promote adoption of approved development tools and engineering best practices that improve team productivity and delivery outcomes.
• Evaluate, recommend, and implement emerging technologies and platform capabilities that improve engineering productivity, reliability, security, and customer experience.
• Collaborate with Cybersecurity, Enterprise Architecture, Compliance, Infrastructure, and Data & Analytics teams to ensure secure, compliant, resilient, and well-integrated solutions.
• Manage strategic vendor relationships, software development partners, consulting resources, and managed service providers, including service quality and delivery accountability.
• Manage departmental budgets, resource planning, and vendor expenditures supporting Digital application initiatives.
• Ensure compliance with organizational standards, audit requirements, regulatory obligations, privacy and security policies, and healthcare industry practices.
• Develop and maintain Digital Engineering roadmaps aligned with enterprise strategy and measurable business outcomes, coordinating with Quality Engineering and other partner organizations as needed.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Leading Agile delivery transformation, technology process transformation, digital modernization, cloud adoption, and software engineering operating model improvements.

Engineering Practices Demonstrated Experience

Required

SDLC, Agile, Scrum, Kanban, DevSecOps, CI/CD, software engineering governance, automated testing practices, and secure development practices.

Digital Platforms Demonstrated Experience

Required

Building and supporting API-driven architectures, integration platforms, responsive web applications, and mobile applications for iOS and Android.

AI-Assisted Development Demonstrated Experience

Required

Leading adoption of GitHub Copilot or comparable AI-assisted software development capabilities, including enablement and outcome measurement.

Technical Knowledge Strong Working Knowledge

Required

.NET, C#, SQL, Angular or comparable modern web frameworks, cloud technologies, API architectures, GitHub Enterprise, and automated delivery toolchains.

Quality Engineering Demonstrated Experience

Preferred

Partnering with Quality Engineering organizations on test automation, continuous testing, quality metrics, release readiness, and performance testing for digital applications.

Cloud & Platforms Working Knowledge

Preferred

AWS or Azure, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, API management platforms, observability, and modern application security practices.

Healthcare Industry Experience Preferred Healthcare payer, insurance, claims, member, provider, or digital customer experience platforms. Certifications Relevant Certifications Preferred Agile, cloud, DevOps, software engineering leadership, or AI-assisted development training or certifications.

The expected salary range for this position is $180,000 - $190,000, based on factors such as experience, skills, and role requirements. Actual pay within the range will be determined during the hiring process and in accordance with applicable wage and hour laws.
