Software Engineer: Backend

As a Backend Engineer, you’ll build scalable infrastructure that powers AI-driven business communication products used across customer support, sales, and marketing. You’ll design robust APIs and backend services that support high-volume messaging and automation workflows. The role gives you ownership across the full development lifecycle, from researching and defining requirements through implementation, testing, deployment, and monitoring. You’ll work in a globally distributed, asynchronous engineering environment where strong written communication is essential. You’ll have significant responsibility and the opportunity to work closely with experienced entrepreneurs and a fast-moving technical team. This is a hands-on role suited to engineers who enjoy solving complex backend problems and taking ownership of meaningful product initiatives. The position is open globally, with recurring team meetings scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 2:30 PM GMT. Accountabilities:

• Design and develop highly scalable, intuitive, and well-documented APIs for new products and services.
• Take backend initiatives from initial research and requirements gathering through task definition, implementation, deployment, and evaluation.
• Create Engineering Requirement Documents that translate product ideas into clear technical plans and actionable development tasks.
• Build comprehensive automated test suites to maintain product quality, performance, and reliability.
• Implement product analytics and monitoring to measure the effectiveness and success of newly launched features.
• Contribute to high-scale backend systems, including APIs, messaging infrastructure, query systems, webhooks, and other core services.
• Collaborate with engineers and stakeholders throughout the development lifecycle while working effectively in a predominantly asynchronous environment.
• Independently investigate technical challenges, propose solutions, and communicate designs and trade-offs clearly.
• Participate in a structured, paid work-trial period involving an agreed-upon backend project and collaborate with the team to deliver it successfully.
• Monitor and evaluate implemented solutions and contribute to continuous improvements following release.

• Strong understanding of web API architecture, including the ability to design high-quality, scalable, maintainable, and well-documented APIs.
• Professional backend software engineering experience, with the ability to take ownership of projects from concept through production.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly the ability to communicate technical ideas, designs, requirements, and proposed solutions clearly in an asynchronous environment.
• Ability to work independently while knowing when to seek input, clarification, or technical support.
• Strong interest in participating in the entire product development lifecycle, including research, planning, implementation, deployment, and monitoring.
• Comfortable working in a remote, globally distributed, and asynchronous startup environment where priorities can move quickly and effective time management is important.
• Fluency in written English is required, while strong spoken English is highly advantageous.
• Willingness and availability to participate in recurring team meetings on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 2:30 PM GMT.
• Ability to commit to a two-week, full-time paid work trial as part of the mutual assessment process before a potential full-time offer.
• Experience working on high-volume systems, messaging platforms, search infrastructure, public APIs, webhooks, or distributed backend services is advantageous.
• Compensation may vary according to role level, location, market conditions, relevant skills, education, certifications, and professional experience.
