Software Engineer: Platform SRE

Every engineer at Flexport ships code that moves real freight across 112 countries. The faster, more reliable and safer they can do that, the faster the world’s supply chains move. The PSI (Platform, Security & Infrastructure) team makes this possible: we build and operate the infrastructure and foundations that hundreds of engineers rely on to run Flexport’s products around the clock.

This is not a role where you wait for tickets. You’ll look across systems, identify risks before they become incidents, and work with the software engineering and security teams to make our infrastructure more resilient, observable, efficient, secure, and easier to operate.

What You’ll Do

You’ll help build and operate the infrastructure that powers Flexport engineering. That means:

• Designing, building and operating reliable, scalable infrastructure in AWS and other cloud platforms
• Contributing to our container orchestration (Kubernetes), Helm charts, deployment systems (Argo) and the guardrails around them to ensure engineers can safely deploy, run, understand and debug their services
• Improving our observability stack (Openmetrics, Datadog) to make insights into our systems as good and easy to understand as possible
• Following and helping refine standards for our Infrastructure-as-Code codebases (Terraform)
• Supporting developers with CI/CD pipelines (Buildkit, Github Actions), build tooling (Gradle, Bazel, npm/pnpm/bun, Go and Cargo) and artifact repositories (Artifactory, ECR, github)
• Improving our incident response tooling to ensure we can efficiently handle incidents when they occur
• Partnering with product teams to ship changes that impact the wider engineering org, * Real leverage: the improvements you ship are felt across hundreds of engineers and thousands of deploys a day
• Strong ownership: you’ll drive meaningful pieces of design, implementation, and rollout
• You help shape the foundation: the infrastructure patterns and operational standards the team sets become how Flexport engineering runs software for years to come

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, site reliability engineering or infrastructure engineering experience, with meaningful time spent on production system infrastructure
• Solid knowledge of cloud infrastructure, with hands-on AWS experience
• Strong Infrastructure-as-Code skills, preferably with Terraform, and an eye for safe, reusable infrastructure patterns. Clickops should be your tool of last resort
• Solid software engineering skills and the ability to build automation and production tooling in a general-purpose programming language
• Experience participating in incident response and blameless post-mortems or COE processes
• A proactive mindset: you’re comfortable with ambiguity and can identify high-leverage problems without waiting to be told what to do
• Good judgment around infrastructure: security, IAM, networking and change management
• Strong communication: you can write a clear design or incident document and explain operational tradeoffs
• A generally helpful attitude. Everyone should know you within no time as the person who gets stuff unblocked, points them in the right direction and makes their work easier. The 90’s can keep their BOFH.
• A drive for impact: you care about our systems being reliable and want engineers to feel confident operating what they own

Nice to Have

• Experience operating AWS at scale across multiple accounts, regions and availability zones
• Experience with GitOps and continuous delivery tooling such as Argo CD
• Experience with Identity and Access Management, including OIDC
• Exposure to disaster recovery, business continuity, or resilience testing
• Experience improving cloud cost efficiency and resource utilization
