Job description

This is not a traditional internal IT or service desk position. You’ll work directly with modern server and infrastructure technology, helping build, deploy, maintain and improve high-performance server environments.

The role is highly hands-on and broad, covering physical server builds, Linux administration, virtualisation, networking, storage and infrastructure troubleshooting.

As the Senior Engineer, you’ll remain technically hands-on while also helping support, mentor and provide guidance to other engineers within a growing technical team.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Build GPU and compute servers from individual components including CPUs, RAM, GPUs, storage, PSUs and cooling systems.
  • Configure BIOS, firmware and hardware settings.
  • Rack, cable, commission and maintain servers and associated infrastructure.
  • Diagnose hardware, performance, thermal, power and connectivity faults.
  • Install and administer Linux environments, predominantly Ubuntu and Debian.
  • Deploy and maintain virtualisation infrastructure including Proxmox hosts, clusters, VMs and templates.
  • Support storage technologies including ZFS, LVM, NVMe and RAID.
  • Configure and troubleshoot networking including VLANs, routing, firewalls, VPNs and secure remote access.
  • Support monitoring, logging and alerting systems.
  • Work with modern NVIDIA/GPU infrastructure, including testing and benchmarking new hardware.
  • Contribute technical input around infrastructure design, capacity, power, cooling and future requirements.
  • Help improve technical processes, documentation and infrastructure standards.
  • Support and mentor other engineers, sharing knowledge and helping develop capability within the team.
  • Support occasional work at other UK data centre/customer sites.

Requirements

You’ll be an experienced infrastructure/data centre engineer who enjoys being hands-on with the technology, rather than purely managing projects or working behind a desk.

Essential experience:

  • Strong hands-on Linux administration experience.
  • Experience with Ubuntu and/or Debian highly advantageous.
  • Physical server hardware/build experience.
  • Virtualisation experience with Proxmox, VMware, Hyper-V or similar.
  • Strong understanding of networking fundamentals including IP addressing, VLANs, routing and firewalls.
  • Experience with server/storage technologies such as RAID, NVMe, ZFS or LVM.
  • Strong infrastructure troubleshooting and fault-finding ability.
  • Previous experience supporting, mentoring or leading other technical team members.
  • Full UK manual driving licence.
  • Ability to work onsite in Bury five days per week, generally 7am-4pm.

Desirable

Experience with Proxmox, NVIDIA GPUs, multi-GPU servers, GPU passthrough, 10-100Gb networking, Bash/Python/Ansible, Zabbix, Prometheus or Grafana would be particularly useful.

Previous experience within a data centre, hosting, HPC, infrastructure provider or similarly hands-on technical environment would also be highly relevant.

Why Join?

This is an opportunity to join a growing technology business where you won’t be pigeonholed into one area of infrastructure.

You’ll get exposure to modern GPU compute, Linux, virtualisation, networking and data centre technology, while having genuine input into how the infrastructure and technical team develop.

Please note: Due to the location and occasional travel requirements, applicants must hold a full UK manual driving licence.
