Job description
Depot Computers LLC runs a fleet of mobile proxy servers built on Android phones, cellular modems and LTE/5G routers, spread across offices and sites in several US cities. We’re hiring a hands-on Linux IT Support technician for our Houston office. You’ll be the first responder for customer proxy support on Telegram. You’ll also build and prepare the hardware that runs our network, and you’ll get new equipment shipped to our remote locations and working there.
This role is about half support desk and half workbench and logistics. You’ll answer customers, diagnose a proxy that went down, flash and configure a modem, pack and ship a box overnight, and walk a remote site contact through plugging it in. If you like fixing real hardware and keeping things moving, you’ll fit in well.
Responsibilities
Customer support on Telegram
- Answer customer proxy support messages on Telegram quickly during your shift. Common topics include connection problems, IP rotation, speed, setup help and account questions.
- Troubleshoot proxy connectivity: check whether the problem is the customer’s setup, the proxy port, the modem or phone, the carrier, or the host server.
- Use our internal dashboards and monitoring tools to check port status, rotate or reset proxies, and escalate issues you can’t fix yourself.
- Write clear, friendly, short replies, and document recurring issues so fixes become standard.
Device preparation and provisioning
- Prepare Android phones for proxy use: set them up over ADB and USB, install and configure apps, insert and verify SIMs, and label and inventory them.
- Prepare and configure Sierra Wireless EM7455 LTE modems: firmware and carrier configuration, testing with Linux (QMI/ModemManager), and installing them in host machines and USB enclosures.
- Configure ZTE and Exigo D50 LTE/5G routers: admin setup, band locking, APN and carrier settings, firmware updates, and signal and speed testing.
- Bench-test every device before it ships (connectivity, IP rotation, speed, stability) and record serials, IMEIs, SIMs and assignments in inventory.
Shipping and remote-site coordination
- Get new and replacement equipment out quickly: pack, label, and book expedited or overnight shipments (UPS/FedEx), then track each one to delivery.
- Coordinate with remote office contacts on delivery, install timing, and power and network needs.
- Guide remote contacts through physical setup by phone, video or Telegram (cabling, SIM swaps, reboots, placement for signal), then confirm remotely that the devices are online.
- Handle returns and RMAs of failed hardware, and keep a running count of spares on hand at HQ and at each site.
Linux and network support
- Do basic administration on our Linux hosts (Ubuntu/Debian): SSH, reading logs, checking services with systemd, USB and device troubleshooting.
- Troubleshoot networking: TCP/IP, DNS, NAT, VPN/WireGuard, firewalls, cellular signal and carrier issues.
- Keep documentation current: setup checklists, device configs, site network notes and troubleshooting runbooks.
Requirements
- 1-3+ years in IT support, help desk, or a hands-on technical role
- Comfortable working in a Linux terminal: SSH, basic shell commands, reading logs
- Good grasp of networking basics: TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, NAT, VPNs, and how proxies work
- Hardware troubleshooting skills with PCs, USB devices, phones and routers
- Clear, professional written communication, since most customer support happens in chat
- Organized and detail-oriented, able to track inventory, serial numbers and shipments accurately
- Able to work on-site in Houston, 9am-6pm Central, including every Saturday and Sunday
- Able to lift and pack equipment boxes up to 50 lbs
Nice to Have
- Experience with cellular modems (Sierra Wireless EM7455, Quectel), LTE/5G routers (ZTE, Exigo, MikroTik), or carrier and APN configuration
- Android ADB experience
- Knowledge of proxies (HTTP/SOCKS5), mobile proxies, or IP rotation
- Telegram power-user experience
- Experience with shipping logistics (UPS/FedEx business accounts, expedited freight)
- Bilingual (English plus another language)
Benefits & conditions
- W-2 contract-to-hire with Depot Computers LLC, 6 months, at $20-$25/hour
- 40 hours per week, 9am-6pm Central, 5 days a week
- No insurance or benefits during the contract period
- Full-time hire evaluation at the end of the 6-month contract. The contract may be extended to 12 months before a full-time decision.
